At what point do these teams ignore their scouts and just draft by NHLe or the top scoring CHL player available at their pick?
I think most GM's are the ones in charge of first round picks. It's ultimately their decision. Anything after the first round or two, I doubt GM's have heard of 90% of the players.

Ignoring the last few years, the Leafs draft record is horrible. 2011 they had two 1st, Tyler Biggs and Stu Percy. Schenn isn't an awful pick (was highly touted at the time), and they did well with Naz and Reilly. Between trading many of their 1sts and taking Gauthier, along with the others listed, they've had almost no production from their first rounders.
Yes, if you ignore one third of their picks, the Leafs look awful. Come on.

Kadri, Rielly, Nylander, Marner and Matthews were all excellent picks, Schenn is about to hit 700 games, Tlusty played 400. Biggs, Percy and Gauthier didn't work out. The Leafs have actually done quite well in the first round.

In comparison to their draft position this is not a great list at all.

That would imply they’d be better with the people taken a couple picks after. That gives them

Finley (Cogliano) - Oilers get much worse
Hamill (Gagner) - much worse
Cherepanov (Plante) - impossible to know
Blum (Nash) - worse
Tedenby (Eberle) - much worse
De haan (Paajarvi) - better
Gudbranson (Hall) - much worse
Huberdeau (Nuge) - pretty equal
Noeson (Klefbom) - much worse
Galchenyuk (Yakupov) - better
Horvat (Nurse) - pretty equal
Dal Colle (Draisaitl) - much worse
Strome (McDavid) - much worse
Tkachuk (Puljujarvi) - better
Vesalainen (Yamamoto) - too early

For some reason that doesn’t look as good to me. Or are you saying that any team sucks at drafting if they ever don’t take the player who ends up being the best possible player available at that slot?

I remember someone did this experiment with the Canucks drafting around 2007-2012 or so, the gist of it was that if they fired their entire scouting staffs and replaced it with a computer that automatically picked the highest PPG CHL player available, they would have doubled their games played and points produced among draft picks.

A simple script that a first year student could write in a couple hours massively outperformed an entire team of salaried scouts. And the script didn't even look at any European or American leagues at all.

9 picks over the 13 year period for the Penguins. Pretty much a horror show (Maatta excluded) after the first two years (only top 5 picks). Average draft position of that later group is #20.

2005 - Sidney Crosby
2006 - Jordan Staal
2007 - no pick
2008 - Angelo Esposito
2009 - Simon Despres
2010 - Beau Bennett
2011 - Joe Morrow
2012 - Derrick Pouliot
& Olli Maatta
2013 - no pick
2014 - Kasperi Kapanen
2015 - no pick
2016 - no pick
2017 - no pick
There's a reason I hate Shero.

Yep Dallas has been awful. If I was in charge they would have Ellis and Fowler instead of Glennie and Campbell. I wanted Ellis, and he was a reach, but he's a guy you could tell had hockey IQ. And Fowler falling in 2010 was a no br... no wait.

Avalanche have to be up there... outside of top 3 picks it's bad. Lets take a look

2005: No 1st
2006: Chris Stewart(3/4th liner)
2007: Kevin Shattenkirk(Top 4 D)
2008: No 1st
2009: Matt Duchene
2010: Joey Hishon( played 13 NHL games, bust)
2011: Gabe Landeskog(Top 6 forward)
Duncan Siemens(AHL fodder, bust)
2012: No 1st
2013: Nathan Mackinnon(Top 6 center, but slight disappointment till this year)
2014: Connor Bleakley(Bust, 0 NHL games)
2015: Mikko Rantanen(Top 6 winger or top line winger)
2016: Tyson Jost(Too soon)
2017: Cale Makar(Too soon)

After careful consideration it's not as bad as I had thought, although a severe lack of 1sts for a team as bad as the Avs. Lots of high picks with easy decisions, but Rantanen and Shattenkirk stick out as good picks for where they were selected.

I don't know, Buffalo could be up there, even though it's more about depth issues here.

2005 - 13 - Marek Zagrapan - 0 NHL Games
2006 - 24 - Dennis Persson - 0 NHL Games
2007 - None
2008 - 12 - Tyler Myers - Top 4 D-man, traded in Kane trade
2008 - 26 - Tyler Ennis - Injury prone, undersized forward, traded in Scandella trade
2009 - 13 - Zack Kassian - Didn't become Lucic 2.0 like we wanted to, traded in Hodgson trade
2010 - 23 - Mark Pysyk - Bottom pairing D-man with limited offensive chops, traded in Kulikov trade
2011 - 16 - Joel Armia - Didn't work out in Buffalo, traded in Kane trade, looks to be doing great in Winnipeg
2012 - 12 - Mikhail Grigorenko - ....
2012 - 14 - Zemgus Girgensons - Bit of a disappointment
2013 - 8 - Rasmus Ristolainen - Top 4 D-man being overused
2013 - 16 - Nikita Zadorov - Doing fine in Colorado, traded in ROR trade
2014 - 2 - Sam Reinhart - Trending fine I think
2015 - 2 - Jack Eichel - No need to explain
2016 - 8 - Alex Nylander - meh
2017 - 8 - Casey Mittelstadt - tbd

Missing on basically the entire 2005-2007 drafts, and most picks from 2008-2011 are the main reasons for suckage.

Why would you ignore the last few years? Cherry picking at its finest

Before the Barzal year the Islanders were waaaay down there. Nino (good player who they ran out of town after he scored literally one point in 55 games as a rookie), Ryan Strome, Griffin Reinhart, Ryan Pulock, Michael Dal Colle, Josh Ho-Sang

Nino did well somewhere else, Pulock and Ho-Sang are fine for their draft slots, they did well to get as much as they did for Strome and Reinhart, but man. Those were some really high picks

Bailey was a first, though I think Isles fans considered him a disappointment for a while. Obviously not now.

That doesn't really surprise me tbh. Some organizations just can't draft and don't have the proper people in place.

Pulock has been solid this year, and Ho-Sang is getting no minutes in Bridgeport thanks to Snow's idiotic grudge. But yeah. From 2015 on has looked damn good, though. Barzal has obviously been amazing, and Beauvillier has been solid too. Bellows looks like a top prospect as well. And we do have good late round drafting

The Paradis pick never ceases to amaze me. A little over 5 months after he's drafted he's traded to Toronto for Jiri Tlusty - it worked out in the end, but considering Paradis never played a single game in the NHL for us, Toronto, Chicago, or Tampa Bay and at this point in his career is in the LNAH, I *have* to wonder what Rutherford was thinking when he made that pick. For somebody who gets so much love lately he made some absolute headscratchers in Raleigh. "Ryan O'Reilly? Robin Lehner? Pass. How about this Paradis kid?"

When it happened I wanted to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. That pretty much went away when Tlusty played his first game for us (scored a goal and recorded an assist).

Interestingly enough, Carolina has found some gems in the later rounds (Faulk, Slavin, Pesce, Aho), all of whom would be 1st rounders in a redraft.

I could see the Goat carving out a career worthy of a 23rd OA pick.
I don't see it here. But I think he can play in the NHL.

Flames had a mixed bag:

2005 - Matt Pelech (13GP) - Bust
2006 - Leland Irving (13GP) - Bust
2007 - Mikael Backlund (520GP so far) - Lots of injury concerns early on. Rounded out his game after being meshed a few years ago.

2009 - Tim Erixon (93GP, traded like pokemon cards) - Bust + LOL
2010 - NA (Involved in trade for Olli Jokinen)
2011 - Sven Baertschi (253 GP) - Middle 6 winger?
2012 - Mark Jankowski (51GP) - Long term project when drafted. Currently his rookie season. Middle 6 C?
2013 - Sean Monahan (377GP) - Top line C; Emile Poirier (8GP) - Completed rehab recently. Bust?; Morgan Klimchuck (0GP) - Injury prone + buried + Bust?
2014 - Sam Bennett (218GP) - Middle 6 winger?
2015 - NA (Involved in trade for Dougie Hamilton)
2016 - Matthew Tkachuk (133GP) - Top line winger

Ye the 2015 draft saved Snow from terrible drafts with a stud in Barzal and a solid looking player in Beauviller. Nelson also a solid pick for where he was drafted. Way to many top 5 busts.
