Apparently the coaching staff has actually asked Nylander to reserve as much energy as possible for transition and offense. I agree that he has looked passive, more so than anything I've seen in a competitive game post-draft. If that is by design, I won't worry too much about that.

Not the best game today, was put in quite a few tough spots by his teammates as well. Still got two points.

People who watch him skate, will never say he is slow. He's a north south skater with good speed, perhaps they are saying he is not a good lateral, east west skater. This would be true also.

Classic bigger = slower assumption. Just like how people think Braydon Coburn is a slow skater just cause he's huge, even though that's not the case.

Wasn't Gauthier always seen as an "awkward" skater? Haven't seen him play a lot so I'll plead ignorance

Gauthier was solid that period.
Made a few decent plays in the offensive zone, drew a penalty and made at least one really strong defensive play on the backcheck.
