I'm 99% sure he wasn't a first round pick.
You're right. He was our 1st overall pick, but it was 2nd round (two picks before Duncan Keith). I had forgotten that was a year we didn't have a 1st rounder.

I agree, I don't get wrapped up in scouting services...but when people use 1 that is the highest out of many to justify a pick it seems disingenuous.
Wait...
In slightly over a decade of drafting, our best picks at the forward position have all been guys with clear two-way ability.
Our worst picks have been skill guys who come up for a half-season at best and then off to another continent three seasons later.
...And people are mad that we're going with what we know has worked for us?
Quennville isn't that bad, though! I was just making a point about our scouting team. I vividly remember the announcers and even the NHL staff running around trying to figure out who the Devils had just drafted, and was he even eligible. We probably could have gotten Kadeykin in the 7th round, but Lou/Conte picked him in the 1st!
My real point is that maybe we could have gotten Quennville at 41, but our staff don't take those chances. They select the player the want most. Hopefully we get a solid prospect at 41 and it doesn't backfire on us again.
Well that explains it. They were high on the kid and obviously didn't expect him to make it to 41 so they took him.
I don't think he would of either, if you reverse it I think he would go as quickly as Brenden will go tomorrow. Just doesn't sound like a player that would of made it to 41.
Kadeykin was 2nd round and could be Conte's worst pick along with Foster and lance ward.
He was out of hockey 2 years later.

Here's a better question :
Why has it worked for OTHER teams when it comes to drafting skill guys?
The system... We cant have skilled guys here.. But atleast we acknowledge it and draft around it
But honestly we only had 1 killed draft pick, and it was Tedenby...
“The thing I like about him is he’s a very similar player to Adam Henrique. I hate to talk like that, but he can play the game any way you want it played. He’s good offensively, good defensively and he knows how to play the game.â€
That's enough for me. And if you think about it, that's exactly how LA won the cup.
How about sharifajanfjskfhsjdjwhatever back in 94?
I just pretend Elias was our first round pick in 94.
La won cause they have guys that can score. Gaborik would be our best offensive player, on LA he's third

LA was 26th in Goals for to our 27th. Kopitar their best player only had two more points then Jagr on the season. Kings won because they were tough as nails and opportunistic as hell, and they didn't really play strong defensive teams.
Kings have a TON of strengths...guys that can score really isn't one of them.
I mean what type of team do you think is being built here? Lou isn't trying to make a Washington or Pitt type team. His current model is more along the lines of LA and Boston with some old school Devil's flair. Strong in net, strong blue line (that can skate) and strong complete forwards. They can forecheck, cycle, and make plays and score.
Lou wants more Zach's, Zajacs, and Henriques. Not so much Kovy's.
