I'm sorry this was s reach...you have one service that his ranked 31 and 4 others that have him around 40... do the aggregate. This was a player that should've been a second rounder.

I will never understand why people get so wrapped up in where the scouting services have various players ranked. Each team's lists vary to a high degree. The Devs were clearly high on this guy. All it takes is one team that picks early tomorrow before us to like him and snag him ahead of us.

Lou/Conte have shown in the past that once they have "their guy" selected - they don't care what round he's likely to go in. They'll take a player multiple rounds early if it's the guy they want. Remember Anton Kadeykin?

Just when I'm in a good frame of mind about Quennville you had to ruin it.

I agree, I don't get wrapped up in scouting services...but when people use 1 that is the highest out of many to justify a pick it seems disingenuous.

Well, tell us why?

Good size, very good speed, works hard for every puck, great forchecker all with a bit of skill. Good hands, good vision, decent 2 way game

From eliteprospects.com

Karlsson is a strong forward that is tough to handle at full speed. He has a good compete level, solid checking ability and the smarts to play both ends effectively. He's a strong playmaker given his vision, timing and soft hands but can finish, too. (August 2013)

I love going back and reading draft analysis.

Henrique:

"The Devils likely got a good read on the type of player Henrique was while they were scouting Brad Snetsinger, and had help in earning him a selection in the third round of the 2007-08 NHL draft by New Jersey"

"Henrique is about as well-rounded a prospect as you will come across and perfectly fits the mould of what the Devils look for in a prospect. He’s a smart, sound and versatile two-way forward capable of playing both center and on the wing. While not a flashy offensive player, Henrique possesses an accurate shot with a quick release and isn’t afraid to go to the front of the net to create offense. He also oozes intangibles such as face-off acumen, work-ethic and leadership skills."

SCOUTING REPORT
Assets: Is quite industrious and always leads by example. Displays two-way intelligence and a high hockey IQ. Can also play wing. Plays his best in pressure situations.
Flaws: Must continue getting stronger in order to maximize his two-way acumen at the highest level. Could stand to play a more physical brand of hockey.
Career Potential: Quality two-way center with upside."

Quennville isn't that bad, though! I was just making a point about our scouting team. I vividly remember the announcers and even the NHL staff running around trying to figure out who the Devils had just drafted, and was he even eligible. We probably could have gotten Kadeykin in the 7th round, but Lou/Conte picked him in the 1st!

My real point is that maybe we could have gotten Quennville at 41, but our staff don't take those chances. They select the player the want most. Hopefully we get a solid prospect at 41 and it doesn't backfire on us again. :)

I found a few interesting write ups on the kid.

From Renegade Stylings WHL Draft Rankings
#12 - John Quenneville - Brandon Wheat Kings - C - L - 6'1 - 186

Quenneville is a big-bodied forward for the Wheat Kings. He has a very intriguing amount of skill to go with his frame and has shown the ability to play physical when he needs to. His skating is strong and he has a nice level of hockey IQ. He was near a point per game this season, further elevating that offence with 13 points in 9 playoff games. I know many people have him rated higher than I do, but I have some noted concerns about his compete level. I wrote that he can be physical when he needs to be, but that part of his game was extremely inconsistent in my eyes this season. I noticed him frequently turning away from finishing checks and taking shifts off. This type of play is the main reason why I have him down on my list in comparison to where some scouts and NHL teams would have him.

NHL Style Comparison: Lars Eller

Top End NHL Potential: Borderline top 6 forward

Pick Prediction: 25-35 overall

Good pick, would have liked somebody with a little more offensive upside but I'm just pumped we picked a forward.

I'm 99% sure he wasn't a first round pick.

We didnt have a first that year. Adrian Foster I remember everyone scrambling to see if he was draft eligible. That was whacky.

Good pick, would have liked somebody with a little more offensive upside but I'm just pumped we picked a forward.

That's the only saving grace in all this. That Lou/Conte AT THE VERY LEAST recognized that the FORWARDS pool was close to empty and needed replenishing.

TG Story

The Devils kept it in the family at the NHL Draft – again.

Two years after selecting Stefan Matteau, son of former Ranger Stephane Matteau, with their first-round pick, and one year after drafting Anthony Brodeur, the son of their longtime goaltender Martin Brodeur, with their seventh-round pick, they went with another player with NHL bloodlines, grabbing Brandon Wheat Kings center John Quenneville.

The Devils took Quenneville, the second cousin of former Devils defenseman and current Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville, with the 30th and final pick of the first round Friday night at Wells Fargo Center.

“I couldn’t believe it,†John Quenneville said of hearing Devils director of scouting David Conte announce the pick. “I was just so relieved to be drafted and be part of an organization. I’m just happy. It’s a great moment for me and just to see my family as happy as they are is special for me and I’ll never forget this moment.â€

A 6-foot, 182-pound Edmonton, Alberta native, Quenneville had 25 goals and 33 assists in 61 games with Brandon this past season. He was ranked 23rd among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

General manager Lou Lamoriello compared him to Devils center Adam Henrique.

“David really liked him,†Lamoriello said. “He’s sort of an Adam Henrique type of player. He can play in all situations. We’re very happy. We were picking at 30.â€

Lamoriello said the Devils had Quenneville rated higher than that. They sweated out the final few picks before they selected hoping that no other team would take him.

“This was a draft that you didn’t know what was going to happen as far as what players would be available [when the Devils picked],†Lamoriello said. “David and our scouts did a great job.â€

Quenneville compared his game to that of Dallas’ Jamie Benn.

“I like to play a simple game,†Quenneville said. “When I watch the Devils play I think I see that. I’m a two-way player and I like to chip in offensively. I think I can fit into the way they play.â€

Joel Quenneville, now 55, played 74 games for the Devils in their inaugural season in New Jersey of 1982-83. John Quenneville said he knew “nothing†about his second cousin’s history with the team.

“I better study up,†he said.

In addition, Quenneville’s uncle by marriage is Boston Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk. His older brother, Peter, was drafted 195th overall by Columbus in 2013 and his younger brother, David, played in the WHL this past season with Medicine Hat.

Quenneville believes his strong hockey family background has contributed to his development.

“I have a lot of support behind me and it helped me become the player I am and I’m just happy,†he said.

“With his family, he’s a quality, quality kid,†Lamoriello said. “That’s a prerequisite.â€

Quenneville met with the Devils at the draft combine in Toronto last month, but he didn’t know if they would pick him.

“You’re not sure,†he said. “You just hope.â€

Quenneville said he has “never been to Jersey†before.

“This is my first time on this coast around here,†he said. “I’m excied.â€

Well that explains it. They were high on the kid and obviously didn't expect him to make it to 41 so they took him.

I don't think he would of either, if you reverse it I think he would go as quickly as Brenden will go tomorrow. Just doesn't sound like a player that would of made it to 41.
