Does anyone think Stoner's injury might open the door for Dumba next season? Stoner is a lumbering skater to begin with, has been up and down this season, and now has a lower body injury to overcome.

He's a warrior, his toughness is pretty unique on the Wild, but he will be a free agent.

He's a LD correct?

Would be nice to see him and Dumba on a #1 pairing next year, playing 25ish minutes per game.

Absolutely

I could be wrong, but I swear I saw him play right D once this year.

I don't think this is just because the Wild want control of his development. The kid was an absolute stud at world juniors. I think the team sees he is clearly ready to take his first steps as a pro in the AHL.

I asked Corey Pronman a few questions about Olofsson on twitter:
Gustav Olofsson just sign an ELC w/ Wild and will prob play in AHL. Any idea on how far away from reg NHL action he is?
I like him but he's a good few years away.
Pretty much what I figured. Does his playstyle match Brodin as much as some people say? Or who else in NHL?
more offensive nowhere near as good D

So...pretty much in line with what lots of people here have said, it seems. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him.

I heard the Wild were trying to get him to jump ship to the WHL next season. I think this might have been the way to do it. I didn't get to see him myself, but I have also heard that CC didn't play him in all situations. They used him mostly as an offensive Dman with sheltered min and no PK. Imagine instead of being paired with Dumba, but Gunnarsson. (STT) Swedish Twin Towers.

Wasn't Olofsson the best swedish dman at the WJC, he played good D for them. From what i've heard about him he's a solid at playing D, Brodinesque in using his skating and positioning to make plays on D.

Who knows we'll see him in some AHL games, judging by the schedule its 13 games left if he gets to play in them all. Since it doesn't look like the AHL team will make the playoffs. I think he exceeded the expectations of the staff, thats why they tried to get him to WHL (there was that rumor following the WJC)

Still next 1-3 years in the AHL and he should be ready for NHL duty.

Does that say more about how good Brodin is defensively or is Olofsson bad defensively?

Not sure, but I can't think of any NHL talent that they've produced recently outside of Jaden Schwartz.

Edit: Unless we're counting Nate Prosser

Hillen, Rau, Sweattx2, Bachman, Sterling, Crabb, Stuart, Petiot,Clark, Sejna, Preissing, in the last 10 years. Played 1 NHL game. Not a barn burner list but not a graveyard either.

The only similarity between Brodin and Olofsson would be their Swedish heritage. They play completely different games. When I've watched Olofsson with Colorado College, he attacks the puck in the offensive zone. Loves to shoot the puck. Plays a very offensive game, which leaves him susceptible to defensive mistakes.

Maybe an elite #1 PP D-pairing in Iowa next year then.

Esh ... lofty expectations? Haha

I would tone that down for a player just out of his freshmen year of college and who is still growing into his frame. A good year would be regular on the 2nd pair with good minutes on the PP.

If both Dumba and Olofsson are in Iowa, I'd be shocked if they aren't the top pair. That is what the Wild needs... those two eating up bigtime difficult matchup minutes in the pros (AHL).

I'd split them up. Don't want two offensively-minded defensemen on the same pairing.

I think you are discrediting Olofsson's defensive ability. Dude was a stud both offensively and defensively at the WJC's.

Just because he "isn't as good as Brodin" defensively, doesn't mean he isn't good defensively... if you know what I mean.

Suter and Weber were an awesome pair for Nashville, both offensively-minded.

I've seen Olofsson at the NCAA level, and I don't think he's very good defensively.

Didn't even consider the Brodin comparison in my evaluation of his skill because I don't think they're even remotely comparable players.

Suter and Weber are both Norris-caliber players... Can't really use them as a comparison to Dumba and Olofsson. Not many defensemen can bring offense without sacrificing defense like Suter and Weber.

Jarick

Doing Nothing
Jon Landry was really their only good vet defenseman after they moved Connelly. They should add one more for next year and keep them in the top four with Dumba and Olofsson.

I'd move on from Cuma if at all possible. Kampfer seems like a good PP specialist type and Medvec is a bruiser who probably shouldn't be playing that often.

So that would be two strong defensemen they need to add for next year, IMO. Then maybe they will be respectable.

It is what the Wild needs and it would be AWESOME but I have some inkling doubts about a college freshmen to jump into a top pairing role in the pros. Love to be proven wrong but it is rather lofty expectations to expect a top pairing pro defenseman for such a young kid who is still growing into his body.

Dumba, on the other hand, I have a bit more confidence in. NHL experience, key WHL role etc
