I am also an Appleton fan most times he has the puck on his stick he looks dangerous . He had to work on his defensive play and responsibility when he came but if he has got that down to pat he won't be far off .

Anyone want to take over the prospect polls this year?

I've done them in the past years, but I'm not finding myself with a whole heck of a lot of free time. I'll "pass the torch" to anyone who wants to take it on this year! :D

Not sure why roslovic is a prospect still along with a few others

Depends on what you classify as a prospect to me it's anyone under the age of 26 with less than 41 games (half a season) of NHL experience. So under my personal definition, Roslovic would still be a prospect.

Jeez did Glover bust hard. That's one I certainly called wrong. I liked the defense on that 13-14 USNDTP when I saw some games, Dougherty and Glover looked real good in particular. It looks like Belpedio is only one left with an NHL hope, didn't see that coming (other than the few games Hanifin played for the team).

And according to nhl.com, any player playing more than 25 games in their first year is considered a rookie

Jack has now played 32 games

He’s now a second year player

I add in an expectation of going back to the AHL. Nothing is certain of course but I don't see Roslovic going down. OTOH, Petan has 95 games in the NHL but is a better fit for the prospect label than Roslo is.

Our prospect pool looks pretty barren after everyone graduated (especially if you don't count Roslovic or Petan)

Yep under the NHL's definition of a rookie, he is definitely not a rookie. But under some peoples definitions of a prospect, he could still be a prospect.

I don't consider Petan a prospect as much anymore. He's played plenty of NHL games and hasn't stuck. He's just a tweener now.

Yeah i would say anyone not eligible for the Calder wouldn't be considered a prospect in my eyes.

On another note, man am i excited to see what Niku can do this season. Winning AHL dman of the year as a rookie is no small feat, and it seems like the sky might be the limit for this kid.

In fairness, our prospect pool would look much better if all our young players weren’t so darn good! They’re all playing in the NHL at a young age!
But this is also what happens when we trade away prospects and picks for rentals or older players. I’m not a big fan of selling the future for rentals because eventually it comes back to bite you, but I know a lot of people are and I understand why.

Yes, but Roslovic has arrived. He'll meet your 41 game barrier in the 10th game next season.

It does? Roslovic is money in the bank. Vesalainen and Niku look like blue chippers. Plus Lemieux who will push sooner rather than later. I don't see that as barren.

It would look better with another first round pick, but the top end is strong and the depth is decent.

Money:
Roslovic

Safe Bet:
Vesalainen
Niku

High Upside:
Samberg
Gustafsson

Have shot:
Appleton
Spacek
Stanley
Green
Gawanke
Harkins
Comrie
Berdin
...and more.

Should add...
Petan, Dano and Poolman aren't really prospects, but they have more to give and this helps take pressure off the kids in the short term.

Agree.

My "sleeper" in the prospect pool is Spacek. He's a "pure" C, and once he gets a bit stronger and faster I think he could be an NHLer.

I think Samberg is going to be a stud on D - a minute-munching LD that can skate and move the puck and is really hard to play against. I think this will be his "break out" year as a prospect, when the hockey world says "dang, the Jets have another blue-chipper!"

I am higher on Samberg than Spacek. I need to see Spacek produce up to his skill level at some point. I'd love to see him develop into a Sobotka or Jarnkrok calibre player and I think he has that upside.

He produced fairly well when given the chance, he was just stuck on the fourth line with terrible players for a lot of the season for whatever reason.

He was also learning how to play as a C at the pro level. I thought he handled it fairly well. His ES production needs to get a bit stronger.

The AHL Petan.

He's an interesting prospect for sure, quick and skilled and can be very tenacious. He can also look disinterested off the puck at times, but this seemed to improve over the season in the games I saw.

Ya that's still a million times better then the prospects pool the Jets arrived in WPG with or even for the first few years.

His pace definitely picked up in the 2nd half with 15 points in his last 21 games. Can he sustain that or inch up to a point per game?

I think it's noteworthy that Spacek actually stuck at C in his first pro year. Handling the duties of a center isn't the easiest thing at any level, let alone when the competition gets tougher.

If we get a Sobotka or a Jarnkrok out of him, I'll be over the moon. He was a fourth round pick, after all.

Yup, and Maurice said he was one prospect that played the game like a C should.
