Okay I like this trade a lot less now.

I know, cap space for next year. But we could have made this trade at the draft then.

I disagree.

Lost in all these fond memories of Laich is the fact that he was simply fairly garbage player on the 4th line. Hate saying that now that he's finally gone but he was obviously the weak link that needed to be dealt with. They upgraded him to great 4th liner in Daniel Winnik.

Imagine if they didn't trade him. This board would have been in full melt-down mode right now.

Good luck to Laich in Toronto, but i don't miss him.

What he did differently was get hurt and ruin his Caps career. If Backstrom or Ovie had done the same we'd all be bitter over it.

We wouldn't be having this conversation if it happened to Nicky or Ovi. We'd be a bubble team without Nicky, and we wouldn't even make the playoffs without Ovi.

I wouldn't be bitter, I would just be sad. As I am sad for Laich.

For the longest time everyone here has wanted Laich gone, now he's gone and people starting to catch feelings.

Understanding that he no longer had a place on the CAPS and needed to be traded has nothing to do with enjoying who Laich is as a person and team mate.

I'm not sad even a little bit. He can go cry in his bed while rolling around with his millions of dollars. :snide:

BL wasn't blind, he knew he was getting overpaid. If he really wanted to stay here and be a part of this team, he should have played better. He signed the contract, and he started playing like a 4th liner. It is what it is.

Me and a couple others have noted that he could barely crack a smile while in uniform. He knew and the fans knew it was the end of the road.

You don't think he'd love to be playing better? Suggesting he could simply will that to happen is silly.

Honestly he's lucky he wasn't bought out years ago, but he kept dodging the bullet.

Has to be pretty brutal to get traded from one of the top teams in the league to one that is one of the worst. Based on how Laich was playing/developing at the time he got that contract he definitely was a player most here wanted to keep. Just sad of the already mentioned reasons derailed his career. The injury just slowed him down enough as well as faster players coming into the league over the past couple of years.

Would you rather get 4.5 mill next year and play on last place team? He will never sniff anything over league min again

His Agent is happy to have him in Toronto. Laich I'm sure want to be on this last run but I doubt he would give up $4.5 mil to be here for it even if he could. This was his career deal. He should be set up for life and that doesn't include giving up 1/6th of his nest egg. I'd be shocked if he wasn't out of the NHL after next year if Toronto doesn't buy him out beforehand. I think Toronto fans are going to flip out after watching him play on their team. Can't wait to see that 1st game thread.

They are tanking, remember? I think they will be quite pleased with Laich's performance. :D

Laich is playing TBL right now and looks okay. I think he's likely to play less disappointing on a team that's less up and down the ice and stuck to the boards like the Caps tend to be. As much as want to say the Caps have improved under Trotz, they're still a team with a significant amount of glide in their game. Laich needed to go regardless and still isn't likely to put up many points but I wouldn't be surprised if with decent linemates he produces a little better. He might be able to land a sub-$1M one-year deal after next year as a vet PK specialist but that's a way off. Another injury and he certainly could be done. That's one factor proponents of keeping him don't factor in. If he would have gotten hurt they wouldn't have been able to trade him or buy him out.

Just read the Leafs GDT for the game tonight. Carrick is a dumpster fire it sounds like(not shocked)and no one has mentioned Laich. Just turned the game on but I dislike both of these teams so much don't know if I can watch lol.

You really can't expect Carrick to do well given he just got to Toronto today, didn't take a morning skate, and is paired with a terrible D partner (Marincin)

I know you're a huge Carrick fan but I seriously never saw anything in him but AHL All-Star.

I'm not a big Carrick fan. He was a great player for Hershey, a fan favorite, and a solid PMD but he didn't have a future here. I think he could catch on as a bottom pairing guy who gets PP time.

@ZacBoyer

MacLellan said Laich tried to talk him out of it. "He expressed that he really wanted to be a part of it and win a Stanley Cup here."

Lang I'm watching the game as well, you're comparing Laich's play to the other players in blue jersies, of course he'll look okay when this is the first NHL game for 4 of the Leafs. But seriously, he won a face off but other than that he can no longer get separation from a d-man along the boards when he tries to chip it past them.
