I'd take pay-cut too to stay in Vegas. Best place to play in the NHL imo. Sin city, clubs, casinos, celebrities, parties, women, the warm weather, and of course a contending team. It's the life most players would love to have in their 20's.
That's why Karlsson took less money, and why Stone/Pacioretty almost immediately extended after getting traded

I think I saw that the post tax money in Vegas is the equivalent of like 7.5M per year in New York. Having lived there, I can say that it's miserably hot in the summer, but that's when these guys aren't there. Cost of living is a lot cheaper than other places (I looked and saw in a gated mansion community near where I used to live a 15000 square foot house going for about $4,000,000 . . . a lot of money, for sure, but not compared to other cities). And as you said, you have everything there . . . nightlife, the finest restaurants, etc. Like you, I 100% get why Karlsson did this.
