If Ovi breaks the record, it’s him. Otherwise, it’s Crosby.

I really do think it’s that simple if we’re only talking about legacy. This is barring anything completely unexpected happening by the end of their careers, obviously.

If Ovechking breaks the goal record than him. If not they will be remembered the same.

Everyone forgets about Crosby losing two MVPs due to injury. Concussion and Broken Jaw. He was running away with it at times of injury.

If the Pens get another Cup or Crosby another MVP I would lean towards him. Even if Ovy breaks the record.

Sounds like a lot of here say. If Crosby gets one more MVP it would match Ovi at 3.

Crosby easily

Top 5 player all time
3 Cups / 2 Conn Smythes
he's already 10th all time in playoff points, will likely finish top 4
he's currently 6th all time in points per game (OV is 23rd)
2 gold medals
Golden Goal is the most famous goal scored of all time

Um no its not. Might not be top 5.

Bobby Orr's dive
Mike Eruzione's GWG vs Russia
Wayne's 802
Rocket's 50th in 50
Matteau's Game 7
Ovi's sliding no look vs Arizona.

These are all more famous and memorable in my opinion.

Random google search for "Most famous goal", this list doesn't even include Crosby.
The Most Important Hockey Goals of All Time

This list has him 6th.

Ovechkin is not getting better with age. Ovechkin is still able to score. However, there was a time when he did that plus was top 10 in the league in hits and had over 110 points. In his prime Ovechkin was an absolute beast. He still might be the best goal scorer in the league, but he's not what he was. Ovechkin used to be not only the guy you were worried about scoring at will, but also the guy who you had to keep your head up, whenever he was on the ice, or suffer a massive hit.

I'm actually shocked that Ovechkin didn't suffer a career ending injury, with the way he used to play.

Ovi is the most consistent player.

He is always the top goal scorer and on the hunt for the rocket even at 34 years old.

Many people do but realize that Crosby is almost a full two years younger than Ovechkin. So for the comments that Crosby is behind him in career points, barring Crosby’s career ending abruptly due to injuries, Crosby should blow past him in career points.

Also, a shoutout to the poster that said Crosby should end around 1500 points. He has 1261. So people don’t think he can get more than 239 more? He’s not even 33 yet.

Ovechkin if he breaks the goal record, and I'll be the first to say it will be unfair, if so. People remember the flash more than the consistancy. Many players win the cup. Few become #1 in a specific stat as best goal scorer ever.

Ovechkin.
Crosby is the better player but with all his injuries etc...I think his legacy suffers.

Ovechkin is part of a very small list of players to hit 700 goals, he will hit 800.

Crosby. No doubt. The heir to the throne of Mario. Three time champion. Captain, back-to-back Cups. Best player of his generation. OT winner in the gold medal game against USA. Those Gatorade commercials.

Ovechkin is a great goal scorer and a funny guy. Finally got his Cup too. Not sure if there is a legacy greater than Crosby's, but he will be remembered, too.

Ovechkin pretty comfortably. One has a chance to beat one of the biggest Gretzky's record, the other does not. One is already in the exclusive club (700+ goals), one and only player so far in 21st centure who swept all the awards in a reg. Season, the other does not.

I love both these players but Crosby is and always has been the better player. Ovechkin of course is the better goal scorer and I'd love to see him get the record but even if he does accomplish it Sid will go down as the better of the two.

If Ovi wins another cup it’ll be him. If Crosby wins another cup it’ll be him.

both are not the players they were and as they both decline it’s going to be brutal here seeing non stop Crosby Isn’t good anymore vs non stop ovi isn’t good anymore threads.

You just made one of these terrible threads this f***ing week.

For a long, long time into the future, Ovechkin will be a player young stars will be compared to - and repeatedly fall short.
Every time a new big-time goal-scorer will come into the league, people will be saying "is he as good as Ovechkin though?"
Every time someone will post a 60-goal season or otherwise a really dominant season, people will be saying "how does that season compare to 2007/08 season by Ovechkin?"
Every time we will see someone establish himself as the best LW of the past 5 seasons or the best goal-scoring winger of a decade, we will be asking "what does this guy have to do to come close to Ovechkin?"

Ovechkin is such a convenient benchmark: he has a strong identity, so we know who is similar to Ovechkin and who is not, he has well-pronounced achievements (peak play, goal-scoring titles) to compare to, and he is also not Gretzky, people will not roll eyes at the comparison from the get-go.
Ovechkin is also a recent player: probably it makes sense to compare a future star LW to Lindsay before we compare him to Ovechkin, but who saw Lindsay play? Even now, very few folks did, and 20 years from now the answer may well be nobody. And even those who did not see peak Ovechkin play have Youtube full of Ovechkin videos at their disposal.

And then, as we compare a generation after a generation of future stars to Ovechkin and nobody quite measures up, we will begin to understand what kind of player Ovechkin was.

As for Crosby as a benchmark: why not compare future stars to McDavid or Malkin? Or, if they are goal-scoring centers, one can compare their goal-scoring to Stamkos. Or, if they are pass-first centers, we can compare them to Thornton or Forsberg. Or, if they are good at defense, we have Bergeron and Datsyuk and Sakic as benchmarks. Crosby lacks a strong identity, he is not historically good at anything in particular, so as time passes, he will merge with the big crowd of award-winning, all-time-great centers.

Ovie easily. I've been saying this for a while he'll go down as the greatest goal scorer ever. What does Crosby have he's really good but he's not GOAT in any category. Especially if Ovie breaks Gretzky's goal-scoring record. In 40-50 years from now, no one will care about what ifs or PPG's they look at the history books and Ovie's name will be all over it.
