how did couver manage to get two picks high enough to ge tthem?

Because Brian Burke went through an almost absurd number of trade machinations and team assets to get them.

Vancouver GM Brian Burke was determined to draft Daniel and Henrik Sedin, after their performance at the 1999 IIHF World Championship in Oslo, Norway. He began by complementing his existing third overall pick by trading defenseman Bryan McCabe and Vancouver's 1st-round pick in the 2000 Draft to the Chicago Blackhawks for the fourth overall pick. Then, on the day of the draft, he obtained the first overall pick from Tampa Bay, flipping Chicago's fourth overall pick and two third-round selections. Vancouver and Atlanta then worked out a deal whereby Atlanta, who held the second overall selection, promised to select Patrik Stefan with the first overall pick, leaving both Sedins available to Vancouver at 2nd and 3rd

Anaheim is done. They have the equivalent roster of 3 Ruutus, 3 Ponikarovskys, and 3 Zharkovs scattered around their forward lineup.

The Ducks have lost 18 of their last 20 games and are still ahead of the Devils. That's how terrible this year has been. How can it not be between us, Ottawa (if they trade everyone) and them?

wow! you always gotta wonder. if a team has a chance to draft this kid stefan why are they giving away that chance and making me promise to take him?

they should've dealt that 1oa to someone else. it wouldn't have broken their word that they wouldn't draft a sedin.

wonder if atlanta would've turned out differently. or even stefan? if someone else drafted him

also find it weird a team is willing to move down from 1 to 4 and all it cost was two 3rd rounders? that didn't set off any alarms with atlanta

Seeing Brian Burke's reaction to when Edmonton offer sheeted Dustin Penner, could you IMAGINE how he would have reacted if Atlanta did that?

Patrik Stefan was the consensus #1 pick that year, but the reality is he went down as one of the bigger #1 busts in NHL history.

Stefan will best be remembered for missing an the empty net from 3 feet out & losing the game, which is fitting really.

This team is absolutely the worse roster in the nhl. We would be last place right now if the team didn’t go 5-0 to start the season. There are no pieces on this team that anyone would even want at the deadline. The sens have the worse Record but they still have players that teams want and if they didn’t sell last summer would be better.

I think the hot start and the sens trade deadline will cement us into 2nd worse. Hopefully the lotto helps us

It’s just amazing how badly people can miss on a pick. How is it possible? How would he of any bust have turned out drafted by a different team? Would they still have busted?

Alexander Daigle would like to check in as well. Lots of buzz, lots of hype, he goes #1 and not only ends up a total bust, but in a STACKED draft.

I vaguely remember Toronto having an astounding record i the Patrick division too, since no-one there wanted to see the Devils with Lindros. I think they may have been over .500 against the division, with a record against other divisions so bad that they almost came in dead last.
The had road trip againstt 4 or 5 of the Patrick and won every game ...except against the Devils... coincidence?

I still laugh remembering Daigle saying on draft day "Nobody remembers #2" ....who of course was HOF Chris Pronger

This thread is seriously depressing.

We never finished dead last in the league and now it's a real possibility.
