Where is our offense?

A third line of Hartikainen - Horcoff - Jones will definitely help chip in some offense. Harti needs speed and some scoring touch on his line, and I think Jones will be a great fit. Horcoff won't need to do a whole lot on that line, just be solid and chip in offense when the opportunity is there.

While I do think Gagner should be on the 1st line and RNH on the 2nd, I can see Kruegers logic. In a way it's quite nice to have the lines stay stable so that they at least have a chance to build chemistry together. I just think Gagner's hard work should be rewarded and RNH needs to earn his place on the top line.

They were getting sheltered with soft minutes under Renney, Kreuger is playing them power vs power usually.

In just as many games its been the Gagner line playing against the power. With morons like Whitney backstopping.

The first line has had every advantage the club can afford to them. Unfortunately, like in OKC, theres enough nights when the foursome get shutdown and despite J Schultz supporting some great plays and pinches.

Just like the last couple of years, if we don't score on the pp and if players under 23 or younger don;t score we are hooped. Management has totally and utterly failed in providing anything that is not a high 1st round pick.

The fact that Horcoff is still on the team and people still think he contributes says everything you need to know about management.

Got more goals than Smyth, Belanger, etc...

I dont really get this thread. Stressing out about the youngest first line in the league id bet (youngest top 6 too probably) not scoring enough after 8 games seems pretty silly to me. Are we really concerned these guys wont score much in the future?? Cmon thats dumb

I remember people were saying the same stuff about Hall last year when he went 9 games with no goals... RNH will be fine.

Our offense is there but our system continuity sucks. Our lines are dynamiclly unsound, the chemistry is forced all over the place, nothing natural is happening out there because of this. Our goalie gets pulled with 2:12 to go? This is the NHL you can score two possibly three goals in 2:12. We are facing a rookie coach who is not easy to sway, Krueger is Krueger and he is predictable, with our line combos he is refusing to go back and adjust decisions that contain a lot of his personal feelings, what I mean is that there is a seperation between what we do at work and what we sometimes "want" to do at work, there are decisions and risks we cannot take on the job that we would take in our personal lives, this line is blurred for Ralph right now and he is taking to long to recognise bad dynamic situations and to long to react to them on the ice. This is a professional assesment not a personal one, Ralph is showing his stubborn streak at the wrong time in a shortened season. If I hear Ralph talking about rest and nutrition after a loss again I will throw up on my laptop.

Krueger is doing some really good things, we have shown an excellent ability to adjust our system during games in a very fast manner especiall the last 3 games, this is critical to our sucess this year. The problem has been that we are simply to slow in identifyng dynamic focal points during the games, we are not targeting - tracking- and identifying what opposition teams are doing to our system anywhere near fast enough, and when we do we arent getting superior communication and integration of our off-ice assets in any type of organised manner. Our player managment on-ice has been sub-par, we are finally getting to see players like Hall and Nuge and Ebbs show us what dimensions of their games they have found comfort zones in but we arent identifying and utilising these evolutions at all, Ralph is focusing on system play 100% which is perfect but he has to little emotion or intuative input into this process, and it is showing up now in our performances and our reactions to challenges and our choices when we are under pressure. we need to define a finer line between the way the coach interprets the system and the way the players interpret their options when it comes to fulfilling system responsibilitys. We need to see less Krueger and more player personality in the execution of our system needs. This means we dont pull our goaltender with 2:12 left in an NHL game no matter what, we TRUST the men to manifest offense for us, we show some faith. If anyone thinks this goaltender issue is a small one they are wrong, because it leads directly to our reluctance to change the dynamic structure of our lines, which has led us to a definate lack of 3rd line and 4th line scoring due to a refusal to reunite the veteran line by dropping Hemmers 60 minute scoring threat to the 3rd line where it belongs. MPSs treatment is another facet we are led to, it is wrong to deny his skillset fits the 2nd line perfectly and this is a symptom of a greater illness, to much of Ralphs personality is shining through, this team is defined by well placed tactical dynamic communication on the outside but on the inside its all Kruegers personality.

Ralph needs to learn that the first step is teaching the system and attaining consistant results, the second step is defining and identifying the assets he has that he can interject into that base platform system execution, its called mixing it up and manifesting chemistry using intuative analysis and not relying on system continuity alone and this dynamic goes against Ralphs mindset, no one ever analyses our coaches perspective enough. Ralph is a live and die by the system man, that is where he finds his answers and he is very good at this from an analytical perspective so we need to maximise his effect as much as we can. You want your offense back then ask Ralph to start using the NewAge Hockey System, if he doesnt know what it is tell him to google it, it is a system that uses Intuative Analysis as a core value component. I used it to dynamicly identify the Avs system strengths and weaknesses in about ten minutes of hockey last game and it worked perfectly, at the end of the game had the NHS principals been initiated we would have seen a different result. Ralph made some good adjustments but the speed isnt anywhere near the level we need it to be at, this is where the intuative analysis comes in, it is lightening fast and is deadly accurate. We will be back dicussing this same topic in five games because I see no way to interject anything beyond statistical BS/or system results based analysis into our system and our coaches perspective, there is no available accepted and formally recognised system that can do this, just an unproven word of mouth program based on Intuition of all things and called the NewAge Hockey System. Maybe its going to take a moma2s intuition to take this team to the next level.

This is a weird question given the lack of sample size.
There are 4x players with 2PPG. Do you think that's sustainable?
Will Patrick Marleau continue to score at his pace of 9 goals in 7 games?
Do you really believe RNH will end this season with ZERO goals?

All and all, this team is playing better than it has in years. We're missing 2/3 of our third line (Jones and Horc), and the Euro Line has been somehwhat transplanted in to replace them.

Players go for stretches of being snake-bit. That is normal. They also go on stretches where they average 2PPG, which is also normal.

I'm not too worried. Vancouver was always going to win this division in my mind. We're tracking pretty well given our personnel.

I'm actually pretty neutral right now d... despite pointing out a lot of negatives. I'm not all gloom and doom even though we all can clearly see negatives on the team (especially after losses).

I still am firmly sticking to a 5th in the West prediction.

I think the top 6 are doing fine actually. Yak has scored 5 and hasn't even broken a sweat yet playing 14 minutes per game.

Hemsky is healthy for a change and I think he can step it up a notch yet as well once that line starts to gel more.

PK and PP are running nicely and Dubnyk looks like a legit #1 goalie right now. He should be played in close to 40 games to really give him a shot at taking the #1 starter role by the throat and showing he's truly got what it takes. No better time than this shortened season to give him that chance.

Secondary scoring from the support players is lacking but that will come around imo. They can't suck that bad all year... reversion to the mean and all that.

Toughness and grit will be hard to improve on without personnel changes though. Hopefully Peckham can provide a bit but the team plays an inherently "small and soft" game and that won't change anytime soon.

Sadly, Eager was looking good to me in his 6 minutes he got to play... 2 shots, 3 hits, 1 blocked shot and was skating well and got in a fight. That was a pretty action packed 6 minutes. :)

I was hoping he was going to play a much bigger crash and bash role this year.. and that would rub off on others as well. Petrell and Hartikainen bring some of that but need to do more. Yakupov as a green rookie playing just 14 minutes a night while playing the sniper role is #3 in hits among forwards on the team... something is wrong with that picture.

We seem to have first liners and 4th liners at this point. Horcoff and Smyth have been very ordinary and are both looking like 4th line pk specialists who should get 12-14 minutes a game depending on penalties.

If we could just acquire a legitimate no.3 group, which I think Jones is one part of, it would really help. UFAs, trades, buyouts, they really need to add something to the bottom 6 forwards.

I really liked RNH's game today. He was getting chances. It looks to me like he's got one loaded in the chamber. It will come soon enough.

I didn't pay close attention to faceoff %'s. Not much point in worrying about that number in a road game where the linesmen are basically handing the puck to COL.

Reffing was very frsutrating today.

Whitney isn't giving nearly enough effort. He is cheating himself and his team if he thinks this is all he can bring. Get hungry, get desperate, get pissed off about being weak and get going, man!!!

Hemmer was very good. However, we had a really good set up going with the extra attacker on & I felt he needed to go back to the point rather than force a pass into 2 defenders sticks on what was essentially our last possesion. I guess he got a bit excited...or...maybe he saw Whitney back there and figured it was better to gamble with a tricky play than waste time dishing to Whitney. Thing is...even if Whitney doesn't have the confidence to make an assertive move there...at least we still have the possesion and a chance to work it around for something.

All in all...a decent road trip. There aren't many weak links right now. Other than the aforementioned Whitney.

Even with Belanger, Eager and Horcoff out we seem to have enough horsepower to push every game.

Relax. This team is very young, it is going to take atleast 4 years before our top 6 players are in their prime. They are still unexperienced and young. Therefore the oilers will not have consistency. Thas what happens when you place so much trust in so young players. Blame the GM if you want to blame anyone. But Oilers will not be a playoffcontender for atleast 2 years becuse of this.

And I don't care about "playoff contender" at this stage but this... bottom of the league/doormat phase needs to be over. If they're not in the mix come April then this Timid Tambi experiment has been an unmitigated failure.

Agreed, it's ridiculous to complain about a line that is at the least holding its own against some heavyweight competiton. What isn't being discussed is that these guys are adjusting to playing against tougher competiton playing a lot more minutes and is defensively holding its own which is a big positive going forward. I have absolutely no doubt that the offense will come for these guys, they just need to simplify things and get more pucks to the net, stop trying low percentage, cute plays and i'm confident that they will.

What should be discussed more is that the bottom 6 gives us nothing offensively LITERALLY nothing and are not holding up defensively either. They kill any momentum that the top 6 builds up by being incapable of sustaining any type of offensive pressure, bottom 6's are supposed to be the energy lines that create physical havoc on defenses and we have the antithesis of that in the bottom 6.
I think getting Jones back will help and for god sakes, call up Paajarvi when Horcoff comes back and reunite him with Hartikainen, that was the best our bottom 6 looked all season by far when those two played together.

The defense is also giving the puck up at an alarming rate. Petry and Smid have been horribly inconsistent and we need them to play like a top pairing and Whitney is an outright disaster, he has cement skates on and can't even handle the puck anymore.
I would like to see more scoring from the top line but they should be the absolute least of our worries. Too much panic in here.

Chances are coming, finish has been rusty.
Yaks and RNH both missed a wide open net today, it happens. They'll start going in, our top line's cycle has been outstanding, it was only 36 hours ago we were all agreeing they outplayed and outchanced SJ's top line.

^this

if yakupov or RNH put away those *wide open* goals today, this thread doesn't get started... sometimes players miss open nets, it happens.... RNH is especially in a huge funk right now, missing the net over and over again from prime scoring positions

i'm not concerned... we're playing a LOT better hockey this year as a whole when compared to the last season, that's all you can ask for (consistent improvement)

They matched up against other team's top D-pairings on a lot of occasions last year but Renney tried to give them the best match-ups whenever he could. Krueger is playing them like an experienced top line right now and they're getting all of the tough assignments.

yup, they are getting all the top assignments, playing against the other teams top line - and winning... how this isn't evident is beyond me.... they are already outplaying the other teams top-lines most nights, at an average age of 20.5 or so

the problem with this teams scoring is in the bottom 6, not the top 6

We have no secondary scoring. Something like 1 goal through the entire season. That's absolutely horrendous.

Depth is absolutely essential for being a contender when chances dry up in the playoffs.

We need to either break up our top6 and put 1-2 guys on our 3rd line or hope that the 3rd/4th liners can pick it up.

I believe in tambo

to get another #1 pick

It would be an absolute joke if this club can't make the playoffs this year or next. Absolutely the expectation is for that to occur. If it takes us that long just to get into the playoffs this lineup is going nowhere fast.

Nuge: MARC-EDOUARD VLASIC 15.8, BRAD STUART 15.1, JOE THORNTON 13.7, PATRICK MARLEAU 13.4, JOE PAVELSKI 13.2, PIERRE PARENTEAU 12.8, MATT DUCHENE 12.7, JAMIE MCGINN 10.2 JAY BOUWMEESTER 9.5, ERIK JOHNSON 9.5

I am not really comparing Gagner vs RNH specifically but chose them because they represent their lines.

This looks to me to be pretty strong evidence that the first line is seeing top notch opposition, and to me they are holding their own very well. They also saw an awful lot of OEL against Phoenix. This is a massive change from how that line was handled last year.

The second line is getting more of a dog's breakfast as far as who they play against. I have no problem with this because as they learn to work together I think this works well for the Oilers.

Right now they are 8th in the WC in goals for despite the fact that they have played 7 gmes against traditionally very good defensive teams. San Jose has given up 14 goals in 8 game (5 to Edmonton), Vancouver is tied for 3rd in the West in GA, Colorado was top 8 in the West last year and are tied for 3rd in the West and 10th in the league in GA this year. Phoenix had problems this year but Johnson has only given up 2 goals in two games, both to the Oilers. LA is LA. They don't give up much.

I'm not worried at all. Were 8 games in and people are freaking out as usual. Our record is decent at 4-3-1 and were in a playoff spot. Sometimes goalies win you games and sometimes goal scorers do. Its too small of a sample yo come to any reliable conclusions. The top line has been generating plenty of chances, they will start going in soon. People need to calm down and look at the bigger picture.

3rd & 4th lines are my biggest concern by far. Need secondary scoring in tight games.

First two lines are doing fine.

Top line are each developing defensively and getting closet to becoming complete players.

Still not sure about Hemsky on line 2 but let's wait until Yakupov is truly comfortable.

The bigger picture is we started 8-2-2 after 12 games last season and finished 29th.

We need to win these games against lesser teams, like Colorado and Calgary, in order to pass them in the regular season standings.

There's a fine line between freaking out and watching history repeat itself.

The West IS ultra competitive this year though... especially in a shortened season... Not trying to make excuses just callin it as I see it... Even the "bad" teams are decent in some capacities... I'm sure if the Oilers or Flames or Avalanche were playing out east they'd be shoe in playoff teams, the East is garbage.

I'm not freaking out after that game. Not yet.

Behind the Net stats like Qualcomp were never meant to be quoted after very limited game samples and there used to be a disclaimer on that if there isn't still.
