Kessel was also much closer to a Nylander level asset (last summer) than a Marner level on this summer.

so what ? I wasnt the one that made the comparison, I was replying to someone else and when the trade happened Burke didnt go " Oh Gee i know im trading the 2010 2nd overall and the 2011 9th overall pick"

If Marner were to be traded, it would be for a blue chip D prospect on elc with undeniable potential to be a 1-2 and a first

Deals I would be looking at

Dumba+12th overall (turned down by most wild fans)

Small steel, Josh Manson , 8th overall( turned down by duck fans as they dont see the use in spending so much on a winger)

Boqvist+2018 3rd overall

Makar+2018 4th overall(probably gets shot down by the avs)

Keller+Chychurn+2018 1st

Weresnki+Andersson+

I believe that you can remove the probably from that idea.

Gotta keep in mind four 1sts isn't just four 1sts.

It is 4 1sts and 11M in cap space.

Leafs would be an attractive FA destination and it is a pretty stacked market. They could add another big player with that 11M.

As much as I'd hate to see them pull something like that off, they could do it.

Context. Regardless of whether it was 2nd+9th+32nd or unidentified 1st+1st+2nd, the Kessel trade was a full notch (or two) below what a hypothetical Marner trade would be.

I can't understand the logic in trading Marner. If you need cap room deal Nylander. Don't re-sign Gardiner. Whatever. Marner is a keystone for your franchise, more than Matthews and Tavares IMHO.

Burke thought the Leafs would make the playoffs with Kessel and that the picks would end up being 15th to 30th...

Wrong he was !

Exactly. Burke neglected goaltending in 2009-10. Gustavsson and Toskala combined for an .888 sv% in 68 games.

Kessel trade turned out so poorly because brian burke believed way too much in toskala and gustavsson

So who are the oft mentioned teams waiting to offer sheet Marner in 4x 1st rounder territory? Once we have a list of those we can put to together some deals that both parties would like more

Well let's look at it from the precedent standpoint.

21 year old Tyler Seguin was traded for a first line player Loui Eriksson and prospects Rilly Smith, Matt Fraser, and Joe Morrow. Since Rich Peverley was traded along with Seguin, let's assign one of the prospects to him. Therefore, Seguin was traded for a first liner and 2 A/B prospects.

Whether it was an over/under payment could and has started a bunch of threads of its own. But that was the deal.

So based on that, Mitch Marner return should be a first line player + 2 top prospects.

What do you guys think?

Jones for Marner is pretty similar in term of value, but there is no way Jones leave Columbus the way he is playing.

He is a future Lidstrom in the making, he is a franchise gem

I’m having a hard time understanding why you’d rather trade Marner instead of Nylander here. And just let Gardiner walk.

Even if Nylander gets you a pick and a prospect full of hope. It’s the cap room that will mean more to your team in the future.

It would absolutely suck letting Mitch go, but if Panarin agreed to sign here (he's reported to have interest) and someone offer sheeted marner for 4 firsts he's played his last game in a leaf uniform...that's a unbelievable outcome if Toronto could pull it off

Other than that yeah I'm not in the business of dealing a 21 year old 94 point scorer who's added new elements to his game such as Penalty killing. I'd deal others before him, and would only move him for an really really good deal (e.g. elite young 1d)

not really, you should watch him this serie and year long. He is playing exactly like Lidstrom was. EXACTLY

Comparing styles is different than essentially saying this player is the next "insert name of one of the best players ever at a position"

Is there a chance he can become one of the best dmen ever? Sure.

Is it likely? No.
