Speculation: What would Mitch Marner garner if he is dangled?

When it comes to negotiating a contract in pro sports both sides need to compromise.

I do believe that the Leafs will set a hard deadline for Marner and his camp by early June, and that if a deal isn't close to being finalized at that point, then they'll move him if they can get a significant enough return.

They wouldn't be doing their jobs if they haven't already prepared to look at a frame work for deals with other clubs in advance. I expect they'll do that with both Kapanen and Johnsson as well. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they both also have hard deadlines that end in late May.

I think the LA Kings could be a potential trader partner for the Leafs. It would probably be a larger deal, though.

To LA: Marner, Zaitsev, Liljegren, and Bracco.

To Toronto: Doughty, 5 OA pick, Anderson-Dolan.

I could also see Kapanen being moved to Columbus for Josh Anderson and a package of Johnsson and Brown moved to the Rangers for Chris Kreider (with salary retained).

Start with the assumption that a team in that situation never, ever gets full value.

If you sign Marner at
A 90+ point player at age 21 is worth that package? Time to stop the day drinking.

If you sign Marner at 11m and replacement player X at 1 million it's 12M in cap for 2 roster spots. Assuming Marner score 100 points per season for the duration of the contract and replacement X scores 20 points you average 60 points per roster spot. Now if I go and offer a 6M dollar contract to Nyquist and Zuccarello I'm going to expect to get 55 points from each guy. I get 110 points for my two roster spots. I'm paying the draft pick, roster player and prospect for the upward potential of Marner and 10 extra points. I'd be stupid to pay 11M in cap and what Marner is worth in a vacuum. The 11M in cap is the most valuable asset in the trade.

So everyone wants to offer sheet him at 4 1st round picks but no one will offer more than a roster player and a 1st?

I’m a Marner fan but 1st rd pick isn’t as good as a roster player......obviously depending on the roster player

Oh the old how much is my untouchable guy worth so I can say 'not enough' over and over again.

The answer depends on the contract. If he wants 10+, it's not going to be close to equal to his on ice value.

You know he had 94 points this year, right?

Let me be first to say that trading Marner is absolutely the last resort for the Leafs. I consider him untouchable or as close to untouchable as there is on the team. The only reason I rate Matthews higher is due to the position he plays, but Mitch drives his line being a winger and is hockey sense is honestly second to none.

Hypothetically, if the contract talks are difficult and Leafs begin entertaining offers for Mitch, what would your team offer?

Deals I would be looking at

Dumba+12th overall (turned down by most wild fans)

Small steel, Josh Manson , 8th overall( turned down by duck fans as they dont see the use in spending so much on a winger)

Boqvist+2018 3rd overall

Makar+2018 4th overall(probably gets shot down by the avs)

Keller+Chychurn+2018 1st

Weresnki+Andersson+

As a leaf fan , I say no to all these deals. Been a marner fan since London . Kid isn't going to get worse. He's got skills and passion. Anyone who wants him should be giving up a 1-2 dman .Why trade a kid for picks? I wouldn't trade him for Hughes straight up . Hughes could be better , but it sets back the team 1-2 years. Plus I doubt Hughes will be as good as marner . I personally see him turning into a rnh type . Marner will consistently be a 60-80 point winger , with outliers of 100+. Much like Kane . Marner also plays defensively, pk, pp specialist and forechecks

For

Marner

Doesn't make sense for van. You still have no winger to play with Ep/Horvat and no chance of drafting a top winger for 2 years. And you'll have no shooters on the pp besides Ep

A lot, I hope.

I love the kid.

But I'm dreaming.

He's more important to the Leafs than Matthews is.

Done deal. That's a worse deal for the hawks. You lose a 40 goal scorer. Thought the hawks were looking to add to strome and debrincat as their young offense core that's why went with boqvist. Would do debrincat and the 3rd overall
we just might need dermott in return as well

im not as high on debrincat as alot of other hawks fans.. dont get me wrong hes an awesome player but if way rather have marner its just a matter of that 3rd overall pick because that player will more than likely be a star in the league..
