Where the cap is at right now, I don't see how the Jets can sign JMo to anything other than a bridge deal, unless Chevy is willing to do some "roster surgery."

The Jets have room to sign him up to about 5.5 million per year now and still be able to hit their bonuses:

8 years. Pay this kid.

Also interesting that for a few games I believe he played RHD and did very well...

Listening to chevys last 2 interviews he mentioned something called tagging when he was asked about signing Laine. I asked on another thread what it meant. Someone said it means that basically there could only be so many long term contracts handed out this summer. If most got long term that Laine could not be extended. But only hellebuyck got extended long term so there might be a chance that both morrissey and Laine could get extended. But if only 1 can be then I would choose Laine because if he goes off for 60 it could cost 3 million more then it might cost this year.

I remember the post you're talking about. Other poster(s) debunked it, saying there was nothing in the CBA preventing long-term contracts in any such way. I would't worry about it.

Not true no one debunked it. and it wasnt my explination of it the poster who knew what it was laid out a very detailed example on how it workes. Chevy says in 2 interviews something called tagging in the cba might prevent him from signing Laine long term this year. So that sounds very real. Just go listen to his last 2 interviews when asked about signing Laine this year what his response is

I never said it was your post. I remember it well. And yes, it was debunked by at least one regular poster who knows the CBA well. And I'm not disputing that Chevy said the word tag, in fact I think I heard one of those interviews. I just don't think it means what you think it means.

It's all in the numerology:
Morrissey's number is 44
4+4=8 year contract
5.5Mx8 years=$44M

This kid is is a prototypical Jet #1 pick, and everything Trouba isn't: thoughtful, low maintenance, well spoken, highly motivated and a team player. He also has a supportive father who has a deep understanding of the game and its meaning at all levels.
Anything under 5.5AAV for 8 years, or under 5.0 for 6 years is a good deal.
Floor: what he is now, a solid, if unspectacular two-way top-pair D
Ceiling: Duncan Keith

Don't you think the Jets will need more than just $0.5M in cap space in order to cover for injuries and a possible deadline acquisition or 2?

We have only 2 d signed for more than 2 seasons. Time for a long term deal.

We can also move out Chiarot to save 700k now my that Poolman is in for cheap.

Also gonna need to move Trouba for a nice young ELC top 4 d or an equivalent top pairing d on a nice deal already signed in order to make the cap work next year, but it’s doable.

If they cant shed .5 to sign morrisey. Good luck next yeat

I think morrisey is worth 5.5 to 6.5
Meet him half way and sign for 6

Its too bad trouba is getting prettt much max value for a 1 year contract
I dont think they should reward players who play hard ball and cause harm to future plans

Theyve offered him money, gave him more minutes, plays ona good team, everyrhing else why he wont sign is personal reasons
I think the jets did him right if they offered him ~6mil

Now the jets might not even be able to sign someone long term who actually wants to be here

Jets best D. Lock him down for 8. His average performance level is so high, you almost can't get a bad game from him.

Should be worth 5.5 mil a year if not more.
