To win 2023 draft's top2 picks?
Really had to even guess for the 21-22 season who will land in the bottom 3 in the standings. To guess 22-23 is even harder.
Tor, Edm, Win don't see them fading to the bottom. Montreal, may not be great, but don't see them as terrible over that time. Ottawa, their rebuild would have fallen apart if they are down there. Van, similar situation as their terrible cap situation will be off the books for the 22-23 season, so if they are that bad, they would have screwed up. Calgary, the most likely Canadidan team to be there as they could choose a rebuild option since they seem stuck in mediocrity.
NYR, NYI, Pit, Phi, Was, Bos - unlikely to be terrible. Buffalo, can't trust them to break out of their situation until they actually do it. NJ, still need help in multiple areas and are relying on Hughes to break out at some point. Buffalo is the most likely, then NJ.
LV, Col, Min, STL - have enough to not be terrible. STL looking like they will just be average. Min has enough talent to keep them afloat. Chi - team transitioning from Toews/Kane to DCat and Dach. But, they lack Dmen. Not expecting to be a contending team, but likely with Kane, still have enough to not be terrible. LA, rebuild would fail if they are at the bottom in 2023. Anaheim, AZ, & SJ most likely. Ducks have limited Forward talent. Have multiple secondary guys, but not enough top end guys. Even with a solid D and top goalie, bottom of the NHL this season. AZ, limited talent. Between the Hall trade and the draft punishment, lost some prospects. Money issues, so not likely to spend money. SJ, lots of expensive 30 plus year olds under contract. Fate depends on how well they age.
TB, Dal, Fla, Car, Nas, Det, Cbs, - Of this group, if Det is that bad again in 22-23, that is a bad rebuild and would likely mean that older prospects like Zadina and all of their 2nd/3rd round picks from 2017-2019 didn't pan out. If the decide to move Larkin then I could see them falling that badly. CBS, have the D and goalie, like Anaheim. Need a 1C to get back to being a solid team. But, they have had too many UFA/top players want out so that is a concern and would put them in contention given their offense right now.
Seattle, depending on how they choose to go with their ED, very well could be there.
So, I would say, Seattle, Arizona, SJ, Ana, Buf, Cal the most likely to be in the bottom 3. Strong chance of Det and NJ being there, but would mean that their rebuild is not on track.
