What range of record would you require to consider hiring Nasreddine as HC?

What range would you keep Nas?

Anyone who says he needs to win the cup to keep his job are being quite unrealistic, even if he just makes the playoffs with this crew and loses in first round he's going to get a contract extension and probably be named Coach of the Year.

THIS.

I say this too.

He makes the playoffs after this horrendous start, it's a virtual slam-dunk that he gets re-signed to a new contract as a Head Coach (and the interim label is removed).

If the team doesn't make it, he may still be offered the Assistant role and Shero will hire someone else.

Though I'm not sure that the New Head Coach would even want Nas or not on his staff if he (New Head Coach) wants his own people there.

Anyone who says playoffs or bust just doesn’t want to keep him under any circumstances since the playoffs are so unlikely. Even after 6-2-1 they’re still 13 points back and probably need to be ‘at minimum’ 19 games over .500 the last 42 (think 28-9-5) to make it in the East. Which would put them at 34-11-6 overall in a 51 game stretch and that might not even be enough putting them at 97 points.

I mean are we really that skeptical that if Nas somehow goes 32-13-6 to get to 93 points even missing by 5-6 that won’t merit at least a show me extension? I think anything from high 80’s up would be impressive given where this team was and is.

Agree. Unfortunately the playoffs are not happening this year. This should not be complicated. If another candidate is interested in the job that Shero thinks is more qualified than Nas, the Devils should hire him. If not than they should keep Nas. Looking at the record this year is difficult because the Devils only have one goalie at the moment that has proven he can win games.

Honestly Nas is growing on me alot & I was one of the people who said he needed to go with Hynes at the time. But now that the dust has settled I'm really starting to like the guy. This team went from completely unwatchable to an exciting team now. With Hynes we could of been up by 5 goals & I would be nervous we would lose. With Nas were now making comebacks & not giving up. A few things that definitely stick out to me are 1) Nas seems to respect the players equally & doesn't have his pet favorites 2) The team is actually putting full effort into it which shows that they respect Nas. With Hynes it looked like they didn't even care.
3) Seems to know the problems & is willing to fix it without coddling.
To me it depends what coach is available in the off season & where this team is at in the end. Even if we miss the playoffs if we go on a decent run idk how you almost don't give Nas a chance at head coach. The hard part is to determine whats the biggest factor here? Was the team actually good all along & hynes was so terrible he held them back making us look so much worse then we are? Or is it Nas is actually pretty decent? Time will tell.

This team is not capable of making the playoffs and it's unfair to judge him by that. If the team finishes with a winning record and looks good doing it, I would consider him. The key is how they look, I'd they go through any more prolonged stretches where everyone looks lost and disinterested it is another story.

yeah the key is really how much he can get out of the players both collectively and individually. right now it looks like he's succeeding but let's see how the rest of the season goes. it's unfair to hold the playoffs as a standard because the hole is just too big

I don't think I'd want Nas back [yet], but with the way things have been going the last couple of weeks, at least we can say it was likely all Hynes and Hall and the team on the ice isn't as utterly atrocious as the first two and half months made us believe.

Now, if the 2019-20 Devils actually make the playoffs following a run reminiscent of 2010-11, you'd have to be an utter louse to not seriously consider keeping him.

i was unhappy with him being named coach based on everything we watched over the past few years, but i have to say i really like how he’s handling them. all i need to see is the team playing with confidence and the young guys actually taking steps in their development. that wasn’t happening before and it is now. short of a laviolette or cooper being available, if they keep playing like this for the rest of the season i’d be ok with bringing him back

My feelings exactly! I was very excited to see Hynes go. I was not too happy that Nas got the promotion but I was willing to deal with it until the end of the season. Now with both Hynes and Hall gone and watching the complete transformation of this team I am really behind this guy. Nas has pushed all the right buttons and the team looks so relaxed, confident and happy now. Now if Laviolette or Cooper or is available I think you almost have to go with one of them. If that becomes the case I really liked the idea of letting Nas lead the guys down in Binghamton. Otherwise, if this team has a very strong finish to the season I think he will have earned the chance.

if he keeps this up, there’s a chance that another team will be interested. so our hand may be forced, which is a good problem to have

It’s one stretch of 10 or so games, proper evaluation will have to be done after the season. I just don’t see ray keeping him, unless all of the big fish stay with their teams, bb,lavi etc

I think the real question is going to be: what coaches are on the market when Shero has to make a decision?

He's shown that he has no problem taking someone with no experience in Hynes - so he won't balk at Nas.

That said - if the team continues playing 'up to its potential' - and at this point it is unclear that we would've been a playoff team in any circumstance - the guy is going to get a long look and a show-me contract from Ray. Who even knows if he takes it - there might be a better opportunity for him out there.

Unless it's miraculous deep run all he's auditioning for is to stay on as the new HC's assistant.

This simply isn’t true.

People don’t realize just how deep the hole was when the change happened and the insane pace the team will need to play to even get into the conversation, never mind actually make it.

If he gets this team into the high 80s, he is going to be a major candidate to get the job next season.

I do hope if he does get the job that some experienced assistants are brought in to help him out.

If we can even get within shouting range of a playoff spot I think that would be enough to strongly consider bringing him back.

Now, at this point I think Nas benefits from zero pressure, it's easy to let the guys play free and lose when losing games has little consequence. So there is the question of how he, and his team would respond going into next year with expectations. And if the team finishes strong this season and he is brought back there will be expectations.

In general I do wonder if his easy going style(at least that appears to be his style) holds up over a long stretch, but keep winning games and he will at least be considered.

Except it is. GM's usually get one coach fire before they're next if it doesn't work out. Ray isn't going to hitch his wagon to Nas

THIS + A BILLION (and infinity).

It can't be understated that Ray HAS TO "Hit" on the Next Head Coach or HIS head(figuratively speaking) is going to be next on the chopping block.

I don't understand why it's so difficult for some to understand.

definitely think he has a good shot if the devils play like this the rest of the year.

kinda off topic, but Mueller has looked like a different defenseman since Nas took over. He’s playing way better.

I had missed a few games prior to the last three, Mueller totally surprised me... The confidence is much higher, he playing more controlled particuarly with puck on offensive blue line. Also made a few good defensive stick plays last game. He did almost get coned in another play, but there were more positives than negatives.

Mark this up to not hynes or new Nas demeanor. Ill always remember Mueller getting scratched for like a quarter season a few seasons ago by Hynes, when he didn't even look that bad...i Imagine that probablly messed with Mueller...

You would think so but GM's don't generally think like that. Especially since it's not always as cut and dry as fans like to make it out to be with GM's only getting two coaches. How many coaches did Lou churn through BEFORE he started having any real success in the mid-'90's?

Besides, the guy just hitched his wagon to Hynes for five years and went down with the Bylsma ship in Pittsburgh, I don't think he's going to change his stripes now. Nas getting the team to rally in the second half is only going to confirm Shero's bias toward his beliefs and his program.

I wish there was an option somewhere in between “over .500” and “playoffs.” The latter isn’t a particularly viable goal (though I voted for it...he would surely deserve to remain head coach if this is accomplished) but I didn’t know what to make of “over .500.” There is a wide spectrum that comes with “over .500.” If the Devils finish a few games over that mark, I don’t particularly feel that warrants retaining Nas. However, if they go on a serious run but fall just a bit short of the playoffs due to the hideous start, I think he deserves to stay on.

Agreed, I'd say anything above 85 points personally (at least 50 points in the last 42 games, with the 13 they've had in the last 9 already making it 63 points in 51 games) so that's close enough to over .500 for the season, with the caveat that they have to be more than just sit back and watch Blackwood steal games, the rest of the team has to show progress too.
