Hes overrated.

The advantage for the devils was his pending rfa status so they could recoup some of the assets lost. Instead fitz smoked his own stash.
The massive advantage they had in signing their core to budget caps went up in smoke with one stupid decision. Good luck with that.
was the rfa status really an advantage though when he was due a $10mil QO?

He just signed a contract for all the money his family will ever need and can now take his foot off the gas. Sometimes players continue playing well after doing that, but when you go to a new franchise in free agency, especially a relatively uninspiring one, a player’s production often dissipates in that scenario.

See Gaudreau, Huberdeau, etc.

Devils fans, do you think Ruff is not using Meier properly or is it more a case of him sucking/playing through injury?
All three. This has been the season from hell for him.

-Ruff insisted on playing Meier on LW despite him being a RW basically his whole career. He's also not putting him with Hischer (Bratt/Palat) or Hughes (Haula/Toffoli). mostly he's played with Mercer (who should not be playing center) and either Holtz or Lazar.

-He was actually playing pretty well in late October/early November hen he sustained a lower body injury that kept him out for an oddly long period of time. We never got any clarification on what the injury was, but since he came back his skating is noticeably worse. He missed time again, unclear if it's a second lower body injury or a reaggravation of the earlier injury.

-He has also just not played well. Last year against the Rangers, he didn't find the scoresheet but was still a pain in the ass and made life miserable for NYR. There's been none of that this season. he's not that physical, not crashing the net. Some of this may be injury related, some of it may be usage related, but even when he shoots the puck it's just not going in.

The fact that Fitzgerald resigned him to that contract after seeing he wasn’t a fit with either of the centres, at all, is mind boggling. Makes you wonder what the point of giving up as much as he did for him around the TDL was in the first place.
sounds like a sunk cost / ‘good money after bad’ situation

He's hurt, Lindy is a doofus and some of his plays are the dumbest IQ plays I've seen a hockey player make. I think in the long run, he'll be fine but if he strings another year like this year the Devils are absurdly cooked on that deal.

This makes no sense, he was very good in the Rags series despite not scoring just like Nico/Bratt were and he was the best Devils forward in the Carolina series despite missing a game. You can't just blame Fitz for signing a guy after that. He's dipped but he's a way better player than he's currently showing
