Do they just roll with a 20 man roster? Who gets sent down and who stays? Any trade possibilities?
If it's a short-term injury (IR rather than LTIR), the injured player cap hit still counts, and $10K is probably not sufficient to recall someone. Not only has this thread been made and answered 100 times, but a quick google search would pull up articles breaking this down.
The short answer is by going down to the league min roster numbers and recalling from the Marlies for injury replacements as needed, they will be under the cap by around 10k

A $700K player has a cap hit of $3.75K per day and $10K only covers 2 days.
There is a provision for emergency recalls if the roster is below the 20 players needed, but I'm not sure if the team needs to play at least one game with less than 20 players.
Fun fact.
If you run a minimum roster of 20 and 1 player
Gets injured. You get to call up a min salary player for free as an emergency.
So we signed 5 guys at min. So ultimately we have a 24 man roster. We just call them up as needed on emergency basis.
Might run injury halfway through. Shouldn’t be an issue unless injury just happened on back to back California games.
What happens when you are on a California trip and you need to call someone up? Hop on a plan ASAP and make it for the next game? I guess so eh?
Ya that’s what I mean. It’s pretty much the only time it would come back to bite you
Where am I wrong ?Leafs are employing two cap specialists and authors of the CBA. I am certain they are not this stupid and know what they are going to do, whether that is emergency recalls or whatever.
Do people think the Leafs management are so stupid that they are going to re-activate the players and then go "uh oh" and have no idea what to do?
Isn’t this more of a Leafs board topic, instead of a trade board one?
Easier said than done though. Do we have any past examples where teams have done this for most of the season? Not sure but can't recall any from the top of my head. The point of the 23 man roster is the players practice with your team and understand the systems and are ready when you need them.
Will be interesting to watch how the Leafs deal with the cap and their 49 contracts. Certainly not much wiggle room
Where am I wrong ?
Did you write this with or or even ?
They're not that stupid. They'll go "uh oh !" before trying to recall someone.
They signed about 5 1 way players to take advantage of a loophole that no one knew existed.
You really think that no one knew about this ?There is a plan, whether it is emergency recalls or some other provision that they are doing that no one knows about (like offseason LTIR a few years ago), they will be under the cap and make things work.
You really think that no one knew about this ?
And what loophole would that be ?
And what do 1-way contracts have to do with this ?
What if at one point of the season you Leafs have 10 players injured?
That you can call unlimited emergency recalls up throughout the season for no extra cap without using LTIR if you go under 20 healthy players.
That’s why they gave all these 1 way contracts. So that the players are less likely to be claimed on waivers.
Now players like Aberg etc are stashed in case of injury. Without going through waivers or counting against the cap.
At least according to bobby Mack
If I was the coach I would wait till Hyman is ready, then when we are playing a bad team run 11 fwds and 6D. Load up pn ice time for the top 2 lines to pad stats and then get my exemption. One important caveat: The team has to play at least one game shorthanded before an emergency recall is allowed.
