Burke?
No, it doesn't necessarily get you that. So Phoenix trades us OEL for Eberle + 2nd overall. What does that lead them with? They've still got a decent group of d-men, but they've gotta wait for Ekblad to reach his presumed potential.
They've got a competitive team that's projected to make the playoffs now. Why would they trade their MVP for a 1st line winger and a potential franchise d-man?
Franchise players more or less only get traded when they piss off their team (Thorton), are going to free agency (has happened many times before) or ask to be traded(Happens every year too).
You know when arrogant Phonix fans say they want two of Hopkins, Hall and Eberle for Oel? They're downright serious. No. Not suggesting that value is there. It's just that hard to pry a franchise d-man who's happy to play where he is away from a team.
Exactly. Why would they trade him? They wouldn't. If we're trying to pry someone like OEL from Phoenix we better be ready to make them an offer they can't refuse. Probably the dumbest GMs in the league go in this direction to acquire players.
You need to identify circumstance and capitalize on opportunities. All great players were traded due to circumstance. Pronger, Heatley, Hossa, Phaneuf, Bouwmeester. Those are the deals we should be waiting for, and when the opportunity rises, we jump on it.
If the cap creeps up on some team like St Louis or something and they have to jettison a defenseman, that's the time to make an offer because the value is at its lowest.
Weber is likely the next top defenseman we could likely see moved. And if the circumstance around Nashville becomes money, how attractive would a top 5 pick + a highly rated prospect be? If the philosophy behind the move is rebuilding, then we're the perfect partner.
It's easy to win trades.. but it starts with sound management and solid ownership. It's the franchises without them that are the ones that end up trading their superstars.

If that's what it takes. But then Burkie would be sad he doesn't have a 1st to use himself.
I'd actually do that deal. KLowe + MacT + our 1st overall for Burke.
