What are the odds of Karlsson re-signing in SJ?

I'd say very good. The Bay Area/San Jose is very nice for the most part. Of course, like most metro areas it does have it's bad areas but I doubt they'll be living near any of those.

However, the weather is really nice. Not as hot as SoCal in the summer and a little more rain in the winter and fog in general but no harsh snowfall but you can find good skiing/snowboarding pretty easily.

The City (San Francisco) is fun and has a lot to do as does Oakland and Berkley. Silicon Valley is nice and provides a lot of business opportunities. Tahoe is not the long of a drive but is gorgeous with great snow and gambling. The Redwoods. Santa Cruz. LA an hour flight away as is Vegas...I could go on but will stop there.

I'm not trying to put down Ottawa or any other city but there is a reason why so many do move California. It is a very gegeographically beautiful, diverse state with a lot of different things to do.

...Personally, I'm looking at relocating to Tampa/Clearwater because it has gotten really crowded here and the taxes suck and Florida doesn't have any state taxes and is really gorgeous too. Those are the two main downsides for California though.

However, his decision will likely come down to what his wife wants and money.

Having spent some time in both areas I'd take middle/northern California over Tampa 100 times out of 100 if I had hockey player moneyz.

It's a lovely area. I grew up in Orlando but went to Tampa a lot for games. Clearwater beach is probably my favorite in FL.

All depends on how the seasons goes. If they don't show they have the potential to win a cup which I don't believe they do he'll move on. I think it's highly likely he goes to FA anyway whether he intends to stay or not just to see what's out there.

This is how I feel as well. I think that even if he ultimately resigns in SJ, there's quite a few places he wouldn't mind ending up. I expect him to hit the market, meet with VGK, TB, DAL, SJ (pretty much the main spots we heard about leading up to the deal) and then make a decision.

For the Senators' sake, I hope he does re-sign in San Jose.

If he does, Ottawa gets an extra pick. Or a slightly higher pick, I can't remember which.

People always make it their MO in these threads to talk about how shitty the Sharks future looks. Doug Wilson doesn’t care and neither should you.

The Sharks’ prospect pool is generally ranked at the lower end of the middle of the pack, but they actually have about five more forwards who are comparable to Rudolfs Balcers and Joshua Norris. Doug Wilson trades a bunch of mediocre junk for superstars over and over again and it’s time we all just accept that it’s just what he does. In a 15-year time frame, he has traded for Joe Thornton, Erik Karlsson, Dan Boyle, Brent Burns, Dany Heatley, Evander Kane, and Martin Jones. Do you know what the best piece he gave up was in any one of those trades? Can you even name one of the pieces?

Assuming the season goes well, I think he’d stay as long as another team doesn’t offer him a larger contract. Even-money, it’s a safe bet.

That said, I don’t know how the Sharks are looking long-term. Maybe he’d be trapping himself on a rebuilding team most of that long contract, idk

Nice! I've liked Orlando when I've been.

That is the main reason I want to move there. The Gulf Coast is beautiful with great surf and beaches and fishing. Plus, they have all the major sports I follow there.

Having spent some time in both areas I'd take middle/northern California over Tampa 100 times out of 100 if I had hockey player moneyz.

Cool man. Me too. I grew up spending summers in South GA with grandparents and aunt and cousins, but have extended family all over FLA so I am very familiar with it. I like FLA a lot.

I don't necessarily disagree, but how many pro athletes do end up going broke because of the economy, or bad investments or even fraud? Take Jack Johnson for example.

That 1 million in taxes (at least) could make a significant difference one day especially if you have children.

I find it likely but at the same time who knows. No way to really predict the odds of this happening but it probably has a lot to do with how the year goes and if he and his wife like it there
I honestly expect EK to have signed with the team that acquired him within a week of the trade. Since he has not it’s tough to say. I don’t expect him to sign before the tdl. At this point he might as well play out the year and do the Tavares thing in June.

SJ will be a contender for his services. Players by all accounts almost always have SJ as one of the cities on their trade to list.

Likely comes down to winning and whether EK sees them as a legit contender over the next 5-6 years of his remaining prime.

Does he really want to go to TB and join Hedman? Who knows.

I don't think either of those two things are a factor. Karlsson is from a small rural town in Sweden, he said he likes Ottawa because it's the closest thing to it in the NHL. Also, if his wife had to choose, she'd probably want to be in Ottawa. She's from Ottawa, and sounds like they're both very family oriented and close to her family. Karlsson hasn't sold his home and plans to keep it his off-season home.

At the end of the day, his decision will be based on his career. I'm not sure he wants to sign 8 years with SJ's ageing core. But he's also a pretty loyal guy. I'd give it maybe 85% chance.

I think, like others have said, it'd dependent on their success this season. Honestly though, if you're going to sign an 8 year contract with San Jose, you better be ready for about 5-6 of those potentially being a borderline/non-playoff team as Thornton/Pavelski/Burns either leave or show their age.

My opinion is that he bails at the end of the year but I wouldn't really be surprised if he stuck around for the area/lifestyle.
Please don't talk about things you clearly know nothing of

Good or bad he stays, he didnt just go through a decade with a bad team and a year through hell just to bounce back and fourth on the off chance he can ride on a team's coattails to the cup, hes here to do the work and win the cup with a contending team and thats SJ
