Wearing Jerseys Pick-Up

I am a recently reformed grey jersey wearer. Although it is light, I finally picked up a white jersey as I constantly heard the confusion it caused dark during a weekly pickup. I get it and am on the road to recovery.

I'll also throw red into that category. And anything that at a quick glance look like a blend of light and dark like white jerseys with dark shoulders and arm stripes.

Grey practice jerseys shouldn't even be sold.

It all depends on how you act on the ice. If you are a good guy and don't act like rat is game 7 of the Stanley Cup then you should have no problems. If you are a bit of ***** then people will start to chirp and probably use the jersey as ammo.

Let me give you an example:
I am playing in a rat with a guy who is wearing a full Mario Lemieux kit. Now I notice this from the start and in my head I'm thinking this is kind of ridiculous, but there is no way I'm going to chirp him for it. I don't really like chirping guys I don't know. Anyways during the rat he is playing real hard and at one point I'm skating into the zone and he steps right in my lane. I end up hitting him full speed as I have no chance to stop. Right away I go to check on him and I ask him if he's ok. He's pissed at me and tells me that his knee is not supposed to bend that way. I want to tell him to chill it out, that it was an accidental collision, and one that was his fault, but I bite my tongue. Then throughout the rest of the rat he starts playing a little chippy. So at one point after a slash or something I say, "Why don't you ****ing cool it Lemieux." And a couple other choice words about his full Penguins kit. You could tell that really got him b/c he shut up and did cool it. My guess is that he was thinking the same thing you were. He was thinking should I wear this or will I get chirped. Well he would not have if he wasn't being a dick, but since he was I felt like embarrassing him, and I know I did.

You're a too nice guy. Could have said "You should have brought you Bobby Orrs, playa!"

I wore a white Rangers jersey to a pickup game today, didn't get any chirps or anything, just like 2 compliments on it. It doesn't matter as long as you're respectful and play hard

I wear a practice Oilers jersey, and some practice variation of the old 3rd jersey they had.

I don't understand all this nonsense about what jersey you wear. Sure if you're wearing 66 or 99 and trying to act like it you'll hear about it from the other fellas, but other than that it's just a top to cover your gear. Who cares whether its a Team Canada, a Redwings game-worn sweater or a plain white one? Some people need to get over it.

hahaha...my feelings exactly, i dont understand why people care that much about what players jersey's people wear... i mean if your cool with wearing it to play in then go for it.. i myself wouldnt do it because i wierd about my "player" jerseys (only wear to games or while watching on tv) but thats just me...

i will say all you need for pick up though (which everyone said) is a black and white jersey, i just keep them in my bag at all times...and to the point of the "off" color's, i am color blind (mild) and i dont have issue's with the red's or greys so much but moreso the brown's/green's/blue's/etc. that throw me off

I never wear fancy jerseys to practice/scrimmages unless we arrange to wear NHL jerseys or something. Then I rock my Burrows uni

Grey, light blue, or yellow. There was a guy at a pickup game I played in Sunday night wearing a light blue jersey on the "dark" side. Several people in white had asked him to switch and the guy was offended.

Get this: I played ball hockey on a team that had bright yellow shirts, the other team's color was dark navy. Their spare brought a yellow shirt and didn't think to change. After passing the ball to her repeatedly, I finally insisted that they get ANY color other than yellow for her, even bright green. And someone pulled out a navy blue shirt for her to wear.

I usually wear plain white or plain black, but I have a knock-off Vancouver bure jersey that I wear from time to time because it would just collect dust otherwise. No one seems to care when I wear the Bure one.

As a goalie, I would love if guys each had a black and a white. I don't care if they're authentic, have names on the back, were blessed by the Pope, or worn to consummate a relationship. Whatever. I just want to see five guys that are discernible from my guys.

Mismatched socks bug me, though. If I'm trying to find the puck, looking through what appear to be twenty guys gets a little disorienting!

I disagree... in fact I usually wear red because it allows me to play on whichever side needs the extra player to balance things out. Nothing like having 6 black jerseys and 4 whites.

Unlike grey, it's pretty easy to recognize red at a glance.

Red is a great "either way" colour. It's the white jerseys with black shoulders that drive me crazy peripherally. Someday, someone will show up in one of those home/away combo jerseys from the early 90's and REALLY mess things up!

Red is a great either way jersey if you're taking a class that has a short scrimmage at the end and everyone is wearing a variety of jerseys.

If you're playing an organized pickup, red is dark, period. I've never seen red used as light.

And if you're playing pickup, just take appropriate jerseys. It's not hard. Why do people want to argue over it? Sorry if you have an orange ex-team jersey that you'd like to wear. I have one too and it collects dust. Such is life.

Guilty on the white with black shoulders jersey for pickup. I like to think it's obvious which team I'm on, but maybe not I guess?

My dark option is an old high school jersey. It's pretty much solid dark blue with dark grey shoulders.

I wear white socks (they're actually the Dallas Stars colors, even though I hate that team, but it's what was available at the pro shop one day) no matter which jersey I wear though. Probably confuses the poor goalies if I go dark.

As I posted upthread, I've seen red used as light plenty of times. Usually it's a matter of there being way more darks than lights, and the reds are the ones who get sent over for balance. Better than having wildly uneven teams.

Of course, being in Raleigh there are a lot of reds so that plays a role.

I think it's worth drawing a distinction between an organized pickup where a fixed number of people show up (i.e, 10 per side) and teams are divided up before hitting the ice vs an open ice situation where a random number of people show up and you split them up on the ice at the start and go from there.

I'm speaking specifically of organized pickups.

The tux jersey was quite the conversation piece. We had our own winter classic outdoors with about 75 people watching (kids had the ice in the morning, dads in the afternoon) and everyone got a kick out of it. For next year we may do white vs black tuxes.

I played a pick-up game yesterday that was supposed to mimic the Winter Classic. You were assigned to either the "Wings" or the "Leafs."

People were encouraged to wear an NHL jersey of either team if they owned them, otherwise wear dark for Leafs and light jerseys for the Wings. This was CLEARLY stated well ahead of time...numerous times.

A guy showed up in a black Wings practice jersey. He was required to change after his first shift.


re: Red Jerseys - I have a red Reebok Edge jersey (very pricey for a practice jersey, I must say). I really like it and nobody has a problem when I wear it as a dark jersey. I wouldn't ever consider wearing it on the "light" team though. I will say, it was useful for a game when I had to switch back and forth between teams

That's why I don't like it. Always requires that extra thought about what side red is on which can make a differemce in dices ion-making speed and timing. Goes back to it being easier if people just had black and white.
