We will have some flexibility for once to finally add a potential big piece to this team. The Hawks have gotten off to a better start than most of us on here (minus myself and a few others of course) could have thought possible.

We have a number of young "guns" ready to step into roles next year as Boqvist, Mitchell, Beaudin, and Krys all could be ready for a jump on the blue line. Hillman, Snuggerud, and Dahlstrom all at the AHL level look decent as well..

A few forwards of interest would be Evan Barratt, Artur Kayumov, Jake Wise and Tim Soderlund...with an expected Victor Edjsell and Dylan Sikura as making their way to the NHL this season...

But what about a bigger fish?? We have the chance to add some real talent in what could be one of the best free agent classes in a long time- depending on if we move AA or not, we will have over $15+ mil in cap space ($21+ if we move him) next season (Schmaltz needs to be resigned, maybe a 3 x $4.5 for him), and a few minor names as well like Hayden, Sikura and Kahun...we have no idea what the cap will go up to next year, but the revenue jump and the Canadian dollar seem to be indicating another $3 mil plus could be in line.

Take a look and see:

there is a whole lot of talent in these lists - some might have resigned already not sure, and some likely will before next year...but take a look at the names and think who would look good in a Hawks uniform next season????

Silfverberg would be a Hossa-lite. I love the way Simmonds plays, but he gets hurt a lot. I wouldn’t mind Jake Gardner since we need a LHD that can skate.

Plays a significantly more important role than Panarin. If people want Panarin, they should be okay with an extra million for Karlsson.
I don't think we should sign Panarin at all. Not for the 10M he'll command.
Much cheaper to go after Dzingel, Duchene, Skinner, etc.

In a perfect world (if the money is okay) ... I'll even take the baggage.

Cheaper, sure. But the Hawks need immediate help on D to be competitive again. Only signing cheaper second line forward types doesn't make this team competitive next season.

Just because Boqvist and Beaudin can potentially play next year doesn't mean they will be impact defensemen yet. It's unreasonable to expect Boqvist and Beaudin to step in next year and lead this team through the playoffs. Karlsson is a guy who can do just that.

If I had to choose between Duchene at $7.5 million and Karlsson at $10 million, I think Karlsson is the better value to this team.

That's a no brainer. You pay the premium for a 29 year old HOF defensemen IF a star DMen is deemed necessary by the organization.

I am always torn with adding 1 bigger name or two good names....it depends on who the bigger name is, and I have some concerns with Karlsson and his health, but he would have to be THE major target if he hits the UFA market for us. Regardless of when our kids will be ready, you can bring him in immediately and have a top 5-6 of Karlsson, Keith, Seabs, Joker, Murphy and Boqvist...add Forsling and Manning (still under contract not that I want him) and that could be your top 8 dmen for next year...that is a massive turnaround right there over adding say Dzingel and Schmidt - who I both really like, would likely add up to the same as Karlsson...but damn that blueline just looks sexier with EK in it!! hahaha

But if we aren't in the running for EK...I am all for some type of combo of Dzingel, Schmidt, Gardiner and Silfverberg

I like those names if we miss out on Karlsson.

Karlsson doesn't help us in the long term. He just eats up cap and makes it so we can't pay afford the younger guys when their ELCs run up. Makes more sense to sign Dzingel+Silfverberg and add scoring depth.

I wouldn’t either unless it were a generational type. Luckily Karlsson is.
I dont see SJS letting him go without a fight. Also hes been lacking so far imo, I know its still the start of the season but to be goalless and praised from the high gods? Also is he a generational player?? Or a soon to be overpaid good Dman

How does Karlsson not help us long term?

He’s going to remain an elite 1D for what 4-5 years? That brings us to the end of the Toews and Kane contracts, and right to the point where Boqvist should be hitting his prime.

There’s no point in wasting money on more depth scoring if this defense is garbage.

Karlsson will be 29 next year. IF Karlsson is healthy, he probably has ~5 years of his prime left (giving him until 33).

However, if there are questions about Karlsson's health ... that would change the equation. Karlsson either needs to take a discount OR agree to a shorter contract. If not, I'm going in another direction. The Hawks can't afford another non performing expensive contract.

What's the issues about Karlsson's long term mobility?
