Mueller did not play well.

6 minutes of PK time for him and they didn't score a goal..... its all good. Mueller was fine, not great, but he didn't hurt the team today.

Actually, felt the defensive core was very good all around. Just ask Subban, he thought the guys were great today on the backend. :)

I think Fitz is a better D coach than Naz.

Wasn't Fitz a fairly above average defensive player in his day?

Well, let's give it more than one game before saying Fitz is a better coach than anybody. Tonight seemed very much like a "Oh shit, one of the big bosses is right there, we better get our shit together" performance. Hopefully they can build on it and we can actually turn this thing around.

It does lead to the question of what if this actually works? Does Fitz stay back there all year?

I love watching Hughes skate. Its like maximizing all your speed/acceleration attributes on NHL EASHL for a light build player. I hope he will score his first goal soon.

Finally... Win only matters if we win saturday though.

Hopefully Hischier is back by then. It's great to see Zacha doing well, though.

To the poster who Was saying that he looked a bit like Elias on his breakaway: is it just me or does he actually look a little bit like Elias now without the beard? I swear he looks a bit like him with the helmet on haha.

Maybe he is nursing something? Even Pierre was calling out his skating.
It is possible. I heard he looked gassed after his shifts. So maybe he is still recovering from his summer training.. But then again skating has never been one of his strenghts.

It's amazing how much better a neutral broadcast is when it gets to analyzing things. That aside, I just loved Hall's hit. It was about time a player gets pissed at his play and show some emotion and disgust. I think it gave everybody life. Happy to see Hughes first point, well deserved. Good first win, now beat Vancouver!!!

I was happy that Hughes got his first point in front of his family.

But my gripe with that was that they didn't acknowledge it until well after the fact where they had to add him to it.

It lessened the impact of hearing him get his first NHL point which should've been announced at that moment.

Recall, for example, when Bratt scored his first NHL goal....His parents were in the crowd and were overcome with emotion.

Speaking of Vancouver, wasn't it someone on the Canucks that Hall leveled behind the net on his last big hit he threw?

Fitz has been interviewed for several GM vacancies recently and is universally considered a future star GM. I can't imagine he'd settle for being John Hynes's assistant. I think this is more of a favor for Ray than anything else.

Much better game. One observation is our wingers continue to collapse down low and tight around the net. When the puck gets rotated up to the point there always late to get there and too many point shots are allowed to get through cause the d man has time to walk the line and find a lane. While this system should help with creating turnovers down low and quickly getting to breakout positions, I do believe it’s also been responsible for those prolonged penalty kill-esque periods in our own end

Got to watch the game on replay after the blackout  and was impressed by a couple of things. I expected everyone to show up for a game against the rags with the big boss watching, so that's no surprise.

What surprised me was just how much better everybody's positioning looked all over the ice. Didn't once see a D chasing the puck carriers all over the rink. The forwards were dropping back much further on D and being more aggressive on opponents - which allowed us to actually force turn overs for a change. I even saw Hughes battling on the boards inside the hash marks. Board battles are a lot easier when you can out-man the opposition down low instead being spread way the f*** out hoping for stretch passes. That also improved the breakouts. Notice how often last night our forwards skated the puck out rather our D trying to pass it out?

That improved positioning was also working in the other two zones and on special teams. Our PK wasn't just four guys bunched up around the crease - they were properly spread out and shifting the box from left to right depending on where the puck was. The PP shifted our wingers further back, which meant our point men actually had someone to pass to (amazing how that works, eh Hynes?).

Looks to me like the "assistance" Fitz gave Hynes was to tell him to immediately ditch his new-fangled experimental bullshit tactics and play hockey the way it's been played for decades...and the results followed.
