Yeah I'm not going to pat ourselves on the back for this one.

Tampa started throwing the body around tonight and it changed how we were able to play. The only times we really had any high danger chances around the net after they got physical was on the PP. Its the same recipe that has completely neutralized us the last 2 years in the playoffs. We need to still find a way to get pucks down low when the opponent wants to body us.

It ALWAYS changes the way we play, regardless of the team that deploys it, I can't believe Rod hasn't figured a tactic to counter it, and the guys don't make the decision to meet force with force. Paquette was invisible this game, physicality wise, after using brutal play in a couple games where we didnt need it.

Crappy ending!

Had to step aside to make supper with my teenage Ginger Daughters.

Hopefully better luck with afternoon start on hump day

To that point, we need to beat these guys regularly if we ever want to get past Boston. Both those teams can throw us off our game and we have to break that hex. We know we can do it, but there is more to learn from losses to TB that will help us in the long run.

Skjei's huge defensive misplay that led to a Tampa goal was hard to watch. Also, as was pointed out by some people, what was with our players falling down randomly multiple times? Finally, the refs were way too lax and forgiving of Tampa's several boarding hits against Carolina.

Anyway, I too expected Tampa would come back super pissed off with our two shutouts in a row against them. Hopefully the boys can get some good rest since their schedule has been so jam packed recently.

Aho was terrible last night and Svechnikov wasn’t impactful for the most part either. They could use a healthy TT back.

Hamilton hasn’t looked good all year to me. He looks slow as molasses out there. Maybe it’s lingering injury issues, but he was never fleet of foot to begin with. I still think he won’t be signed by the Expansion draft and they protect someone else.

Skjei has mostly been decent this as he’s played a simple game, but his play tonight on the goal was....well, not good.

Bean continues to impress me, Reimer was great and the team didn’t quit, but it looked like Tampa wanted it a bit more and won those crucial puck battles more.

Aho needs Turbo. McGinn can’t read Aho’s mind like Turbo to know when he is going to have to cover Aho’s rear.

In 1381 minutes of 5 v 5 play the Finns have allowed 47 goals and have a 61.79 GF%. Without Turbo, Aho was on the ice for 977 minutes and 45 goals against. Other metrics are a lot better as a pair. That was 18-19 to today. Expected numbers favored Aho without Turbo. Aho performs below expectations without Turbo and well above with him. Im not sure that is a shock to anyone, I hadnt looked at numbers before to validate the thought

The numbers with Svech and Aho with or without Turbo similarly run true (obviously some of the minutes previously mentioned includes Svech). Interestingly enough the 5 v 5 stats with Svech and Turbo together without Aho (234 minutes which I wasn’t expecting) are really good.

He is very dynamic and fun to watch in the offensive zone. I don't really notice him in the defensive zone...I guess that is good too.

The one thing I do notice in the defensive zone, is that as he gets more and more games under him, he has a calmness about him which is great to see. He still is a little uncomfortable when he's chasing a puck and know a forechecker is going to hit him, but he's learning what works and what doesn't for a player of his stature.

Tampa basically "Bostoned" us last night. It reminded me a lot of the game last season when we were tied with Boston 0-0 late into the 3rd and Gardiner coughed it up at the blue line and they scored. They matched or exceeded our speed and beasted us physically, then they pounced when we made mistakes. All of our top scorers were neutralized by the pressure and playing hot potato to avoid being hit. I was hoping we were past this now being a year older, more experienced.. more mature. I know it is only one game but it was triggering to watch. And much like the recent playoff games against Boston, the ref's were brutal.

The lone bright spot from the game last night was Bean. He looked elite last night walking the blue line. Every time he touched the puck in the O-zone he looked to make a game changing play. He waits out defenders to ensure he gets his shot through layers of D-men. It is so awesome to see the guy seizing his opportunity and taking control of his fate.

I dont have stats to prove it but I would imagine turbo makes everyone he plays with better
Here's 5v5 GF% for last 3 season's combined for players with and without Turbo.

I highlighted any change more than 2%. Red if the player (or TT) got worse. Green if it got better. As you can see, pretty much every player on the team had worse GF% without TT. TT also got worse without many of these players but always by a smaller amount. He also got better without some of them. I cut the list at 250 minutes with as even there, SS limitations start to affect things.

Now, this doesn't account for how a player was used, zone starts, match-ups, etc....

I watched the game on delay.

They got absolutely dominated the first 10 minutes of the first. Reimer kept them in it.

They absolutely dominated the last 5 minutes of the 2nd if the 2nd period was 25 minutes I think they would have won. Notably this was also the only part of the game where they played to Tampa’s level physically.

Can Bean move with the puck or what? We haven’t had someone with that kind of lateral movement on the blue line in a while. Honestly I was not optimistic about Bean coming into this season, but he has made me a Beanliever.

We need a skill guy on the 3rd line with Jordo. Really do not want to see his hands calcify

WTF on those non boarding calls

Skjei makes some boneheaded plays that will burn you.

Dougie is too slow for this team and his play-style. Coming off of injury so understandable, but he is so slow.

88 had some really good flashes

37 had some really good flashes but the Aho line was not on the same page

If people are complaining about the no call on Necas that was a good non call. He turned his back at the last second and Tripp was out to lunch about the guy having time to pull back. He’s a homer announcer, which is his job.

Cant show people your numbers at the last second. It’s dumb.

Offense:
Svech
: has been good so far this year but....I expected him to be great this year. I'm hoping that there is another gear that he will show through balance of year.

Defense:
Bean:
continues to impress
Fleury: was a little slow last night on a couple of plays but not concerned
Hamilton: want more offensively but believe we need to be patient with his movement....it may take much of this year to recover from that broken leg (remember how great he was playing before the awful injury)
BS: well, he is just mistake prone and at almost 27 this is what he will be. I can accept that as long as he plays very physical....I didn't see that last night.

Bolts:
they played physical and gave it their all last night. Even with that effort and our multi-game fatigue please note that it was still 2-2 deep into the 3rd. Plus, we had plenty of chances that on a different night could have been posted. Can that Bolts repeat that Wed/Thursday? It isn't always possible after a max effort game.

I wish we had another day off before that first game since we're going back-to-back & then playing Fl Sat-Monday & then Columbus the next night. That's a lot of physical games in a short period of time.

We should aim for a split in Tampa and Florida and then sweep at home.

btw: Reimer played the kind of game you need in the playoffs....one in which your team plays meh but win due to Goaltending.
