Was thinking the same thing. Makes a bit more sense than Bennett since the Canucks can eat half of his next year salary as well while Bennett has a QO over 2 mill this offseason.

I'd say the opposite, it makes more sense that a team would only want to retain for 1 season.

This one really bites. Poor guy was just catching fire. Think it could be a bigger loss in the room than even on the ice. Undoubtedly made himself one of the leaders in a short period of time. ONLY upside would be re-signing him at a more manageable figure if he continued to keep rolling. But this sucks a lot. Wonder if this pushes management even harder for Bennett. Bennett would be best suited to try and emulate that role. Internally, Joey Anderson should see a chance I hope

Instead of taking a guy from the practice roster to line 2. How about seeing if Mikheyev can get on track with the second line?

That makes more sense for the opposing team, but for the Leafs Bennett would essentially be a 1 year rental unless he really impresses.

On topic, this sucks. Simmonds had some questions around him, but had silenced all the critics with his play early. Seems like a solid lockeroom guy as well, considering how happy Matthews was for him after scoring.

Gonna be a tough loss and nearly impossible to replace.

Likely just means Kerfoot and Andersen aren't returning.

Andersen was kind of a given anyway.

Kerfoot hasn't been performing well enough that we should fret over that.

Bennett is a noted playoff performer, happy to add him. A modest raise should keep him in the fold.

What adds salt to the wound is that he will miss the home and home vs Habs. Refs better be calling penalties cause we will need our enforer to keep them honest.

Terrible timing especially with games against Habs coming up. Good thing is we got other players who have to do their thing. No one can bring what Wayne did, but that's fine. Just come in and find a way to be effective and not a liability.

That sucks. He was playing well, and really finding his groove.

That's much longer than I would have expected. Was such a nothing play.

Hopefully we make that Sam Bennett trade for extra depth

This injury to WS might inspire a move to add a player like Bennett to add some much needed grit component to the roster in his absence.

Because of his skillset this injury loss hurts the Leafs more than numerous other ones would.

Ugh, why does injuries always have to happen to the players that contribute the most and play their heart out? Our third line is garbage, Matthews and Marner can't keep up at this pace all season, need some secondary scoring.

Spezza has contributed more offensively than the entirety of the third line, you know something is wrong there.

Tavares and Nylander are so streaky, who knows when they'll show up on the scoresheet.

This sucks.

Since this eliminates an important component of the Matthews/Marner PP unit, will Keefe just go back to loading up one power play with the big four?
