I loved the Expos, back in the day. My second favourite team to the Seattle Mariners. :)

They had some really fun and talented teams. They got totally ripped off in 1994. Stupid strike!

Too bad the Expos had such terrible ownership. :(

Never cheered for the Nats because I hated the way things unfolded.

Have been cheering for them these playoffs, though.
The reconciliation between Montreal and DC is apparent esp with Nats wearing expos unis. But I don't shed no tear the way things went down. Expos had terrible attendance playing in old park. Had to move. When they moved to DC I was fine with it. Heck DC didn't have baseball for 30+ years because the team was stupidly taken away by Bob short.

40+ years of suffering vs. 15. Not even close. But still rooting for 'em. Go Nats!

The Nats have packed a ton of suffering into those 15 years but yeah you’re right.

I imagine it feels similar for the diehard Nats fans. I think the Caps probably have a bigger fan base given they’ve been around for so long and I don’t think the World Series has seemed quite as earth shattering as getting to the Cup was but I may be biased since the Caps mean way more to me.

Playing in the WS may not equal winning the cup, but don't kid yourself. If they win the WS, it will at least.

The parallels are amazing

Biggest difference is you have Orioles fans being bitter and when caps were doing it the whole region was all in. I remember driving up to Baltimore and being at the Orioles game during game one of the ecf. People were watching the game on the phone and the light rail had a fair amount of caps fans. Then memorial day before the final people were yelling at Bryce Harper Vegas lover. The entire MD VA DC region was ALL IN. There was no dissent.

Contrast that with today where Orioles fans go out of their way to disparage the Nats or insult their fanbase still like Angelos. "DC is not a baseball town." Someone on another caps forum literally said "**** the nats" and I had to do a double take like
I’m an Orioles fan since 1976. Even saying that, I’m ALL IN for the Nats. My younger brother was a big fan of the Nats (even though he followed the O’s like I did thru our youth). I may just fully change allegiances — both in his honour and because DC Strong.

Go Nats!!!

Same here, grew up an Orioles fan since I could remember, but the minute the Nats arrived, the Os were no longer my main team. Peter Angelos made that an easy transition. I still root for the Os to beat the Yankees, but when they play the Nats it's DC for me.

Nothing can ever equal or surpass, but this is getting about as close as you can get. And thanks to the Caps, I’m feeling pretty Zen about it.

There was nothing Zen about that Caps win. Straight up exorcism. I was nervy as hell the whole way through. All those playoffs choke jobs literally haunted me until the last second of G5.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s definitely a lot of that with the Nats as well, but that Stanley Cup in our back pocket has made this significantly easier. I accept the fact that the Nats could lose and focus on how kick ass they’re playing, how fun this is, and how proud I am.

Go Nats!

The question was whether the World Series feels like the Stanley Cup, right? My general sense is that for this area, no, it doesn't. There seemed to be more buzz and a greater sense of breakthrough when the Caps got to the SCF than there is now with the Nats making it to the World Series. When the Caps won it was a groundbreaking moment for this entire region that saw the franchise end 40 years of waiting and heartbreak and delivered the city it's first championship in nearly three decades.

If the Nats win the World Series it will undoubtedly be a huge deal and it will be awesome but will it feel the same? I don't think so... the Nationals can't replicate the longevity or the amount of heartbreak of the Capitals title chase and they wouldn't be the team to break the "DC Curse," so I can't imagine it will have the reality-altering effect that the Caps winning had, but I could be wrong.

I'm not all in with the Nats as an Os fan, but I found myself rooting for the Yankees last week for the first time in my life because I thought it was a better matchup for the Nats. I thought it was like the Skins where ownership and sucking had chipped away from any baseball tribalism.

How could anyone EVER root for the Yankees?! Matchup be damned.....
How can anyone root for the Astros? They act like they invented tanking, a guy went to jail because they didn't bother to change the default password, and they took the Rockets off basic cable.

As far as series parallels go, the World Series against the Astros feels more like the 2018 Tampa series.

Both the Astros and 2018 Lightning Best team in the NHL by consensus. Not many weaknesses. Supposedly better in almost every category over the Caps (Nats). Almost every major pundit along with Vegas (Sportsbook Vegas) favoring Tampa (Astros).

This is the David vs Goliath scenario all over again, although the Nats have already taken one down in the Dodgers (Caps taking down the Penguins)

So perhaps a little out of order:

Capitals-Blue Jackets ---> Nationals-Brewers (gritty comeback early round victory, moment where things did not look good)

Capitals-Penguins ---> Nationals-Dodgers (first demon slayed, the "BIG" one, the proverbial hump, finally got past)

Capitals-Lightning ---> Nationals-Astros (David vs Goliath, against best team in the league, heavy underdogs)

Capitals-Golden Knights ---> Nationals-Cardinals (both series were finished in 4 or 5 games? :dunno:)

Because at one point in history the Yankees embodied all that was wrong in sports?!!? Lol.....

Evil Empire indeed.

Have been watching MLB network last night and a lot today. The Houston Astros are in the World Series. They are great. Let me count the ways. They showed the Houston manager presser. They skipped the Nats. LOL. Ive watched the first 40 mins of the current show where they have talked about the Astros, interviewed Astros players. They mentioned the Nats for a bit as the opposition.

Only difference is Astros are so, so, so good.

Astros being -200 favorites is way different than Caps.

it’s going to be one tough series. Hopefully it doesn’t end up like Caps in 1998

Astros are scary and built top to bottom. Altuve is a beast and the defensive fielding by Houston was crazy in Game 6. Having said this, I believe the Nats will win this. I'm going on a stretch and picking Turner as the Nats hero, however expect Mad Max to be spectacular as usual. Hinch sounded overly confident going into the WS and that can bite a team.

Seattle and Minnesota were always the AL teams I liked growing up. Damn Yankees ruined Seattle in the 90s and stole some players. I actually quit watching MLB after the strike up to about the later 2000s. I found myself cheering for the Nats mostly due to my DC friends and fellow Caps fans even though I'm a lifelong Dodger fan :). I haven't been this excited as a neutral fan since Toronto won their two WS. I am predicting a great WS overall mainly due to the starting pitching rotation of both teams. Nats have fate in their favor this year, imho.

Expos were the As of recent years in that they were farm teams for bigger clubs. For sure the move was going to happen and I'm glad DC got the team. I was chatting with a lady who knows John Carlson and how her dad took her to Senators games. Anyone on here posting remember the Senators?

I think it flies under the radar how despicable this organization is

Osuna is a jerk, yeah.

They imported a lot of their scumbaggery (ie their GM for starters) from St. Louis, another scumbag organization.

They totally tanked and won around 50 games for a couple of years, barely fielding a AAA quality team.

No respect for that organization.

Seattle tanked this year and won 68 games, for reference. At least they tried to win a few games.

That being said, I am grateful they beat the big money Dodgers 2 years ago and they beat the big money Yankees, a few times. I can’t stand those teams.

Houston did that. Now they can lose.

Go Nats!

When I was a little kid in elementary school I had a seNATors relief pitcher, Darold Knowles, as a PE teacher during the off season.
He later set a record for pitching in all 7 games of a world series.
