Where are you staying and what exactly do you mean by artsy fartsy and cornball?

The National Gallery is a good start. Walking and exploring the 'artsy fartsiness' of the Byward Market is a relatively safe bet as there are lots of 'artsy' 'fartsy', 'cornball' friendly type of stores!

I'm just playing on your own words but the above mentioned activities are a 'safe bet'

Well by artsy fartsy I mean that she's an art historian, so she likes paintings sculptures etc stuff like that. She likes landmarky type of stuff.

We're staying over night in Ottawa, pretty much just for the day, early morning until evening.

We probably will be situated around the parliament area, mostly taking cabs or walking to places. Also, any good resturants in the area that are kind "romantic" anniverary type stuff. Like for example where would you take your girl friend to if you had to go out for a nice dinner etc.

She also likes to shop, big shopaholic. It's suppose to be our anniversary, but it's pretty much something more for her than it is for me. I don't mind going anywhere.

Just as long as you don't plan on having a night life experience. I went to Ottawa to see a few Sens game last season and decided to stay the night for one of them. The bars close at 1am. WTF man? I LEAVE my house at 1 am to go drinking.

It wasn't even a bar, it was a resto-bar (don cherrys) AND THAT was recommended to me by some guy working at the help desk at the university of ottawa. The waitress there told me to go to Gatineau if I wanted to have a good night.

What a disaster.

So you depended on asking "some guy working at the help desk" where to find a good bar, and then went to Don Cherry's. Yeah, I can see why your time in Ottawa sucked. Trying preparing next time.

I second the national art gallery.
also wandering the byuward market... And my personal favourite museum is the museum of nature [dino museum]
Also, the museum of civilization is just across the bridge and has a real imax theatre there.
I'd suggest going to their sites and seeing if any particular place has a special exhibit that catches your interest.
As far as restaurants go, there's a ton right downtown - any particular style of cuisine?

The National Art Gallery is a must and the Cafe at the National Art Centre along the canal is a good place for dinner as are Eighteen, Domus, Social and Play in the market.. There are lots of restaurants and bars and galleries in the market which is just on the other side of Sussex Drive from the Parliament buildings.

You can walk to all these places and won't even need a cab.

And don't let anyone talk you into going to Don Cherry's.

Sure "some". But to say "bars close at 1 in ottawa" is just ridiculously wrong. Just because a couple restaurants who have a bar do, you can't assume all bars do. Just wrong.

Thanks a lot this is actually great. We like any type of food. We're Italian, so we want to get out of the pasta's and pizza type of things.

If you want to stick around later into Saturday evening, the Casino du Lac Leamy will be holding the grande finale of the Sound of Light fireworks. It's a fireworks display that makes the Canada Day fireworks on Parliament Hill look like static electricity from flannel pyjamas.

The statue of champlain across the river from the parliament buildings is where you can get a very amazing view of everything. Check that out.

Speaking of the casino... Is the restaurant there still considered a five star? Remember back a while ago it was listed as one of the few [cant remember if it was for all of canada or north america] casinos to have a restaurant classed as high as it was.

I second Play for a nice restaurant, I went to dinner for my birthday and it was very nice. It a 'tapas' setup, so they're smaller dishes that you would share with your girlfriend. I'm a picky eater so I had to open myself up for a night. But if you don't mind experimenting you should have a great time.

There are alot of real good resturants downtown.However if you want a high end fancy dinner your best bet is the casino.

Trip to Ottawa

Hey northern friends. My friends and I were thinking of going to Ottawa for the Bruins-Senators game the end of October, saturday the 30th. From what it looks like to me Scotia Bank is far from downtown and the hotel selection looks kinda weak. I was hoping you guys could give me better help. I have been to Toronto but never Ottawa. Thanks guys, your grateful Bostonian yank.

Its about a 30-40 minute drive from downtown with no traffic.For game nights your looking at about a 1-2 hour drive.If your just comming for the game and don't plan on doing any sigh seeing etc your best bet would to stay in kanata at the brookstreet many teams stay here so you may even run into the bruins in the lobby of the hotel.If you want to do some sight seeing stay downtown there is tons do it be just walking around to see the canal and other attractiosn along those lines.Or if you want to check out the mueums and gallerys etc.Keep in mind the end of oct as a rule is very busy hotel wise and people from all over come and check the fall colours of the trees out.

Yeah, it's a fair distance away from the city unfortunately. I'd advice staying downtown where all the tourist stuff is and taking the bus to the game. It takes about 45 minutes to get there and it's pretty good although usually packed.

Just so you know, the Brookstreet Hotel (from what I've heard, I've never stayed there) is quite expensive, so you'll need to shell out the money if you stay there. Like others have said, staying downtown and taking a bus to the game is really your best (and most cost effective) bet. There are a few shuttles that run from the East end of the city out to the west end of the city where the arena is, and they are pretty cheap. They are as quick or quicker than driving, and its nice because you can relax on the way to and from the arena rather than fighting traffic yourself. If you leave your seats as soon as the game is over, you can usually get a seat on a shuttle without a problem.

I was wondering the same thing milan, I am travelling to visit my folks who live in Ottawa, not sure when the individual game tix begin being offered. I`m heading down the same weekend you are, of course, my trip was planned solely with the knowledge that it was a chance to watch our B`s

Individual tickets for October/November games go on sale on September 11th via capitaltickets.ca, if you miss out on those (which you probably won't, Sens games don't sell out until gamedays), there's always stubhub etc.

I have a summer internship with Adobe, that is sending me to Ottawa for the week next week! I am there Monday evening through Friday afternoon, and although I will be working during the day, I will have some free time at night (or maybe if I can slip out of the office for a long lunch).

Are there any Sens events going on by any chance? I know it is a dead part of the season and it is usually players just working out on their own, but I thought it'd be interesting to take in a little bit of Sens culture while I'm visiting.

I'm sure the people in my group will be showing me around, but is there anything I absolutely need to see while in the city?

This is my first trip to Canada, and although it isn't during the season, I am still very excited.

There are alot of museums and gallerys thata re must sees.The market is another as well as the canal.There is alot to do downtown and area i would suggest you search ottawa and look up attractions.There is a protest planned for donwtown this monday i have no idea how big it will be but my guess it will be fair size it is in support of the tamil refugees.The last tamil protest they did block traffic etc so it may be hard to get around downtown on monday.

Ah crud. More slow downs for OC. Back on topic, it really depends what you like. There are many path including both side of the river that are nice. I use the Gatineau side of the river during lunch (as do many).

It all depends what you are looking for. If your are going to be working at Adobe's shop - you will probably be near Dow's Lake.
