My main position is defense at high level 6s. I use a puck moving defenseman 6'1 170/180lbs. Right now, I'm using Interceptor (purple) and Defensive Awareness (blue) to jack my defensive stats way up. Maybe it's placebo, I don't know. I don't even use the back skating red perk; I have defensive stick. I don't like to back skate when 5'7 twerps are straight lining. I didn't use it last year either, but I don't think it got nerfed so much as the skaters are just faster.
This is pretty meta, and I don't even see a lot of high level guys use this technique. But many times I don't face the puck carrier off the rush, or rather I turn my back when they get near. If you're talking about the same thing with "trail technique," that's exactly what I've done since last game. Maybe I'll hold LT if I'm cheating a lane or in certain situations where I need to face up poke, but when the puck carrier comes near, I skate facing my own net and let them run into me or use my skill stick (hold poke) and stick lift to just steal it. I find it's impossible to read my skater and my agility is better. I do it defending off puck too. Sitting in LT for too long is too clumsy. I'm also a p***y, and I don't hit much except zone exit pinches.
Trail skating is how I defend most 2 on 1s. If they're trying to cross crease, my stick is in that lane too, so they don't pass behind my back. I'm usually quite aggressive just poking the puck carrier before he can decide, if they're not spaced well. Lying down really does work too.
