I really like the Vatanen return, it’s clear we weren’t getting a 1st (even conditionally) with his health issues and i’d rather have Kuokkanen than a 2020 2nd, I like him a lot as a prospect and feel he’s on the verge of being an NHL contributor.

Simmonds was a plug, don’t care what we got for him at all.

yeah he says or in the organization, my bad but I still think that comment is a big overreaction to that. He says later on at 3:45 "he's definitely second round value" so he's not really overselling anything if they value him at that level.

I thought Vatanen was significantly overrated. He plays a pretty game but his impact on the offense or defense wasn’t that positive. He’s fine, but not a top pairing dman plus he’s made of glass. Would’ve like a 2nd rounder but at least the prospect is decent and is probably NHL ready. We should know if he’s any good by the end of the year.

And beyond that, what exactly were the Devils supposed to do to ice a winner next season once this year went down the drain so early on? Hall wasn't resigning, good chance Vats wasn't, Schneider is shot, and we'd probably be stuck selling off Coleman or Palms if we want any impact talent in return, anyway. There was no way this club was going to be turned into a solid winner next season, so what would've been the point of not selling at the deadline and not looking to build around the young guys?

Shero tried to retool and rebuild at the same time; the retool didn't work, and the rebuild now moves from the background to the forefront since this season we actually had assets to turn into first round picks and prospects instead of just more 2nds-4ths. If this club was one solid move away from being a contender and they sold off then fine, be upset, but even with Hall/Coleman/Vatanen/et. al. around this team wasn't going anywhere, and likely only had the ceiling of a wild card team if things broke right.

I just watched that video. The thing that stands out to me is the hockey sense. The thing that feels like it's missing from a Talvitie or Anderson looks like it's there for this kid. Should be interesting to see if he gets into the lineup this year.
