If there wasn't a pandemic and the salary cap goes up steadily by 2-4M every year, this deal isn't bad because you're banking on him being the player he was last year than the player he is this year. What makes no sense is that there was no reason to do this right now in a flat cap. Pearson had 0 leverage and wasn't going to get that from really any team in the league.

You could put him on waivers today and he would pass waivers because of the contract.
