On the plus side… they’re starting to score, the PP looked better, structure looks better in all three zones, and they played well for a good portion of the game.

On the negative side, defensive zone turnovers were awful and cost them a regulation win. Brutal plays by Fever and Malenstyn on what should have been two routine clears and they end up in the net when Philly had no momentum. Very reminiscent of the loss vs Dallas when they were controlling play and kept giving Dallas chances with brain dead plays and penalties. They have to be better at situational hockey and understanding that there are times to try things and press and other times where you just make a simple play and let the next line get on the ice.

Not even counting the turnover I thought Beck played poorly. That TO was just the icing on the cake.

The frustration is visible on Ovi’s face now. Every time the camera pans over to him on the bench, looks like he’s swearing (not sure if English, Russian or both).

Man that’s a lot of goals to catch Gretzky. 11 game goalless droughts aren’t gonna get him there!

They gotta quit keeping him out there for the full PP 2 minutes. He can’t retrieve, receive, or handle the puck or win a 1 on 1 puck battle. So 2 minutes on the PP is senseless. Carbs knows this, but you wonder if making that change is like touching the 3rd rail. Hope not, cuz it absolutely has to happen

This is what you get with youth. I mean, Fever and Malenstyn should know better but those are the little things that 30 year olds make and why there is always room for vets. I’m still good with youth movement and will accept some of that. The other side of youth like CMM and Protas is great to see.

Yeah, and I think he sees how ineffective he has been.

I think he needs to change his game one more time if he wants to keep going. One idea would be to look at what Corey Perry did. When he lost some of his natural abilities, he became a master garbage collector in front of the net.
His immense strength is still there, it was on display tonight when he'd make what looked like little shoves and still send people hard into the boards, he just needs to start using it even if it tires him out in front and see where that gets him. That's the thing that he can still give, insane strength and effort, but he has to find a new level to channel it because he's arguably past the point of just floating in the soft spots... as he stands right now, he's not quick enough to get to the soft spots.

His offseason will determine a lot but for now, as he is, get down there and muck it up, thrive on being stupid strong, and try to slap shit in. If everything else has left you, being a big boy sure hasn't, so go do that.
