Ottawa used to be quite good at picking up gems...

Mtl drafting had been so brutal under Timmins, that dude was so overrated. Sure MB is to blame, but how on earth did Timmins actually become a gead scout? Like what qualified him to assess talent?

Did he ever play, coach, ref? Whats his story?

Take Dru Dru for example -- he goes to Colorado with possibly the lowest confidence ever and is about to have his best output season... this is not to say that he got better, it's because he is in a "true" system now, one that works... now imagine if he had gone to Colorado from TB, he might have had a mych better career..

Some players need to fit. Poor organizational scouting (CLB) make huge errors in assessing talent.. johnny hockey worked in Calgary, but clearly was never gonna be a team #1.. hes an accent player (like CC)... but these guys see 100+ points and think everything is equal.. MB used to do the same.... stupid UFA signings, and they call themselves professional... pft

Started as team manager/conditionning coach for the Sens for 3 years.
Named scouting coordinator for the Sens for 3.5 years then director of hockey ops for 3.5 years.

After that, he joined Montreal.

Graf has to have all 32 teams interested.

It's been reported that Rangers are pushing hard to sign him once his year is done. Friedman also mentioned the Pens. But as you say, a lot of teams surely pursuing him.

I wouldn't mind his teammate Jacob Quillan. 22 year old center, 6' and 196 lbs. Second scorer on Quinnipiac after Graf with 44 pts (15G, 29A) in 37 GP.

Quillian and Graf:

There's a long list for both of these guys, both North AND South of the border.

There's a lot of interest up North on Quillian.

They will look at fit, playing ability and everything to make their decision.

From 32 thoughts.

Edit: by playing ability I mean how they will fit into a lineup

I am surprised that Graf is not being linked heavily with Boston. Dude has literally been in Boston his whole life including the junior bruins
The same teams are always mentioned for college players. Face it. Habs aren’t getting any of them. Those guys usually only sign with contenders.

I could care less, myself - I don't think any of these guys are likely to be impact players. It makes sense for them to sign with contenders, their prospect pools are decimated, they may get earlier opportunities as talent goes out the door due to salary cap constraints.

Unless Hughes thinks he can make some room, they won't have a lot of contract spots to give out once they sign Hutson, Tuch, Engstrom, Davidson, plus you have Kapanen, and a decision to make on Xhekaj, plus Pitlick I assume turns pro with someone if not us. There's also Tourigny, Guindon, Nurmi, Sobolev who I guess they don't give any NHL contracts but who knows what their plans are. I guess they aren't interested in Alexander Gordin, he doesn't have a contract for any team next year and he had a career year at 22 years old but in the minors. Plus he doesn't have the speed/skating that Hughes seems to want.

Smilanic is the one prospect I would say 100% we don't sign to any contract, NHL or AHL.

Plus most are American and tend to sign close to home.

Yeah, we aren't an attractive destination for most players in NCAA right now. A deep prospect pool, a roster that doesn't have many open spots for a variety of reasons, and a lot of draft picks coming.

What are the chances of finding an undrafted college player that will become an effective NHL player? It doesn't happen too often. Danny Dekeyser comes to mind. Who else? I am sure there are several.

Chances are slim, but our coach was one. I’m sure he’d love an opportunity to help out a young player in a similar situation.

There has been a bunch with varying degrees of success. Post #959 has a list of current UDFA that have been signed. There's a few pretty good ones on the list, and some that were good at one time. Most of them seem to be solid placeholders or depth guys.
