He'd be living in Calgary for 5 years. The tax difference is only going to be about $200k per year. Even though Johnson isn't spending all of his money in those 5 years, there will be a slight offset, so the financial impact is pretty minimal.I think the flaw in this line of thinking is it assumes players are spending their annual salary inside a year, wherever it is they're living. So things like the value of their money in any given moment isn't all that significant an issue. They can live wherever they want after they retire. The #1 thing is always how much actual dollars they can be paid.
