If I was coaching against the B's just keep up the heavy forecheck. It's what Carolina is really good at and one of the Bruins weaker points.

Like they say, dance with the one who brought ya.

Canes are a forecheck heavy team. Their path to the Cup is to keep going with that. Either it works out or it doesn’t. The worst thing a team can do in the playoffs is get away from its core game plan.

But the biggest factor is going to be goaltending. They have been straight-up outplayed between the pipes in their playoff exits in recent years. It undoes a lot of good work when the games are tight. If that changes, results will follow.

Am I the only one that thinks the NHL‘s current playoff format sucks ass? Assuming the Devils edge out the Canes for the Metro title why on Earth should the Canes have to play a legit Stanley Cup contender like the Rags in the first round? A more equitable format would be to take the top 3 teams in both the Atlantic and Metro divisions, add the 2 wild card teams, and seed the 8 teams 1-8 based on point totals/ tie breakers. Then seed 1 plays seed 8, 2 plays 7, etc.

Why did the NHL adopt the current format?

They have rendered regular season about as irrelevant as the could.

They were trying to generate more interest in playoff games by generating move rivalry based playoff games

They went back to the divisional format to try and boost interested via building up rivalries.

If the Devils were to pass the Canes under the old system, the seeding would be...
1. BOS
2. NJD
3. CAR
4. TOR
5. TBL/NYR
6. NYR/TBL

So, Carolina would still play a legit Stanley Cup contender, quite possibly NYR anyways.

Exactly. And the Pens will always be a threat with Crosby, Malkin and Letang breathing (as we saw then they faced the Rangers last year). There is no walk in the park in the east this year no matter how they do the seeding.

All good points (especially this year with the Eastern Conference being so dominant) but I still feel like the current playoff system devalues regular season results way too much….

If you really want to fix that, then take all of the teams, East AND West and then rank them. And redo it every round. Then the Final might be Boston and Carolina.

The TV broadcasters won't pay for it, but who cares about money, right?

Teams would despise the travel (and did during the couple of years the NHL tried it), but that would be so much fun to watch. We got a bit of a taste of something similar with the final rounds of the 2021 playoffs and everyone seemed to enjoy that.
