That sounds a lot like The Yard which recently opened in shady side.

Also in the strip, I think its called Gaucho Perillo? The meat shop with all the steak and sausage sandwiches. Only been there once but it was good. And if you're into whiskey, wigle whiskey offers $20 tours with sampling included.

From the menu, it does seem like a relatively similar concept. I'll have to check it out next time I'm in town.

First post from a long time reader!!

Me and my girlfriend are heading to Pittsburgh from South Wales. Around late March early April next year to catch the Flyers game. As you can imagine, we are both very excited, for completely different reasons. She currently has no idea the whole trip is going to be a glorified sports trip. But surely she can't split from me 3,500 miles away??

I was way too excited to see the Pens for the first time, that was until I read this thread.

I now only want to go for the food and the food alone.

You ********

I've just done the opposite trip. I was in Swansea and Cardiff in April. Absolutely gorgeous. Can't wait to go back. Let me know when you're coming and I'll buy you a beer.

I think you'll like it. Definitely a lot different than the UK, that's for sure! lol

Just eat everything in the world while you're here. If you love greasy, bad-for-you food, you'll be coming to the right place ;)

If you're on the southside and want a good sandwhich not garbage primantis, go to Fatheads. 40+beers on draft too.

This sounds excellent. I went to a place in Denver that had 100 beers on tap, it was like a little slice of heaven!

UPDATES:

Again this is all good stuff, I'm only there for a Thursday (day-time) then game and out Friday morning first thing so I will definitely be trying probably 3 of these places.

I'll go somewhere for lunch and most likely start drinking, then walk around for a while, take some pics of PNC/Heinz fields maybe then just randomly wander the downtown area. Probably have some random beers along the way, but then I'll actually go sit down at a bar or something pre-game, then somewhere post game.

Southside sounds good, so does the strip. I'll probably end up at the strip since I ended up with a hotel downtown so southside would just be me walking in the wrong direction only to hit a bar and come back. Might still do it anyway depending on time.

I got a room at Wyndham Grand, better be nice! It looks like it, but I'm not picky with hotels, got it on Hotwire for cheap considering the prices they and others in the area were asking.

I think another thing I wanna SPECIFICALLY ask about...is there any really good post-game spots? I don't mean to ask a potentially duplicate question, but I'm kinda assuming lots of the places you guys are listing would be closed before the game ends. The post game drink place is often the most fun win or lose :)

If you're only going to three places I would most definitely make fatheads one of them, but if you hit the main dining hours you'll have a wait.

I think most of the bars mentioned will be open to 2am (fatheads is) but I am not totally sure. It may be easiest to go to urbanspoon and lookup the websites and info from there.

I don't hang around after games so I can't answer which place is good post game

The Wyndham Grand used to be a dump when it was a Hilton but I've heard from a few people that it's nicer now. It's definitely in a great location. You'll be right on the edge of Point State Park/the Golden Triangle and you'll have a nice view of either downtown or the fountain/river depending on which side of the hotel you end up on. It's also really convenient if you plan to head over to the North Shore to check out PNC Park & Heinz Field. You said you'll be wandering the downtown area but if for some reason you end up back at the hotel right before you head out for the arena area, jump on the T at the Gateway Center station and get off at Steel Plaza. It's free downtown and it'll take you right over near the arena. It's not a hard walk at all but Pittsburgh sometimes gets pretty cold in December.

The bars right outside the arena get a lot of people right after games - either the Souper Bowl, Cafe 5th, or the Blue Line Grille. All are right across the street from CEC. You'll run into hockey fans in pretty much any bar in the downtown area but any of those three will probably be almost entirely people coming from the game.

If you are going to see the stadiums, there are a number of restaurants in walking distance right down the road on the North Shore. They are right near PNC Park actually. It's a newer area and I have been living in Canada for the last 8 years and only recently moved back home. So some other posters may be able to expand on the best places to hit around there.

Beer Market is a solid place for a drink. Its on the same street as the Clemente Bridge, across from PNC Park. If you're looking for something else to do, Rivers Casino is right past Heinz Field if that's something you'd be interested in.

Coming in from Cbus to check out The Gaslight Anthem tonight at Stage AE. No info needed - it's coming back home for me. Just if any of you are there, make sure to say hi. I am a rabbit with a pancake on its head. (not really)

Going to Pittsburgh end of December from Thunder Bay (home of #41) for a game. Was wondering if anyone has any insight on how to get to the Pens morning skate. The game we are going to is Dec. 27th vs Caps. If I am on the wrong thread or if anyone has any info can they message me or reply on here. Thanks a lot. Going all the way there...wanna get the whole game day experience in.

Not sure that Pens' morning skates are public at the CEC. They sometimes have practices at Southpointe Ice Rink and those are public.

I know I see a few people in the stands for some of the morning skates, but not sure if they are special cases (charity cases to meet the team after, etc).

I went to a Wild/Pens game last year and asked one of group sales managers who sold me the tickets...he said its up to the team who gets into the morning skates there. Im guess its the same with most teams. Being from Thunder Bay maybe I will have to try Bortuzzo himself.for some assistance. Thanks.for the reply.

Penguins practices at Consol are not open to the public.

I left Pittsburgh almost 3 years ago now and still have regular dreams about Fatheads.

Those mozzarella sticks. The draft selection. Good lord.

Wingharts are definitely good burgers though. I like being able to order a burger medium-rare and actually get meat good enough to pull it off. I prefer them to Burgatory.

Union has great burgers too.

I'm not a fan of Winghart's. Their burgers are too salty for me. I definitely prefer Burgatory.

BRGR and Butterjoint have my favorite burgers in the city.

Penguins Playoff Tickets

Hi all,

a group of us are looking to put together a bachelor party and the location I'm looking into is Pits. We would be going in April/May and one thing I wanted to look into is how difficult/expensive it has been historically to get a group of tickets to a Penguins' playoff game. Being from Toronto, I unfortunately have little experience with playoff ticket price increases. ;)

EDIT: we're not looking for great seats, but rather a chance to take in the atmosphere of the game and have a good time.

Also, we'd be golfing - how's the weather for that down there in April/May?

Any help is appreciated!
