Koko Miami

Take this with a grin of salt, but I have on good authority he basically just quoted Yogi Berra for fifteen minutes. He wants the guys to be overwhelming underdogs, but not make too many wrong mistakes.

He finished off talking about how he might be ugly, but he never saw anybody score with their face. (I did this in EASHL once. It was amazing)

From N&O:

In the first on-ice practice Thursday, Svechnikov often was used with Sebastian Aho at center and Michael Ferland on the opposite wing. Necas centered Teuvo Teravainen and Brock McGinn in the split-squad practice.

Sounds like the aftermath of the Rask injury. Lindholm, Ryan, and Rask are all gone from last year at this moment. That leaves Jordan Staal plus a group of guys with about 20 combined games of NHL experience at the position. Realistically what happens here if Aho doesn’t transition well and positionally Center is too much for a 19 year old Necas?

Is there another historical example of a team with only one actual NHL Center? Please tell me it all worked out and they won a Cup?

Not necessarily. Rask was in the opposite group as these guys from day 1 so his injury probably had little to do with it . IMO, they know what they have with Aho and TT on a line, they don’t want the two rookies on a line, and want to see Aho at C so it makes sense to try things out in camp. Doesn’t mean it will stay that way.

Statistically speaking, teams without a good 1-2 center combo usually don't win cups.

I realize it's early in camp and it's partly because of Pesce's health issues, but CDH-Faulk makes some sense. Faulk has always "seemed" to play better with a veteran defender as his partner and CDH seems to be a good match for that.

That, and Faulk makes more sense to me for second unit deployment. The risks are obvious, but that’s a guy who is best suited to get medium-difficulty minutes.

Also this

Slavin Hamilton
De Haan Faulk

Is a solid top 4, good mix of offense and defense, good safety net type guy for Faulk as well.

The look of that has me at least considering some of the Pesce for young forward (Nylander, Connor etc) that are proposed. I think that the way the D would be constructed without him could still be very good. The obvious problem is cost certainty. Pesce is locked up long term and reasonable, while Faulk and Hamilton aren't. Will they both be willing to resign? What would the total cost be? If it were possible to answer those questions, Pesce could go for an impact forward to me.
