Looks like Milano is going to get released from his PTO.
My dream is that Toronto can work out a forward trade with Calgary to get one of their RHD, ideally Weegar.

Calgary has a need for a top 6 forward, what they were auditioning Milano for, which looks like it failed.

We are flush with LW's, starting with Kerfoot, that could be a basis.

Fools dream, but man it would be something. Considering the summer that Calgary has had, it would kind of be the perfect finishing touch.

I believe it was Friedman the other day saying the Leafs would look to trade forward depth for Dman that was either waiver exempt or passed through waivers.

That being sad, Chicago is probably happy he cleared.
I thought we were pretty well off for defensive depth, I've got a lot of time for Mete, Kral and Villeneuve and once Liljegren gets fit I doubt any of them will get much of an opportunity

I don't mind keeping the forward depth though, I think we may need to churn through a lot of those guys getting our mix right

There are a few players that would be decent claims for a few of the bad teams. Oskar Steen and Kole Lind should have been picked up from the top of my head.

It isn't about us, moreso other teams.

It was also more of a joke where teams only claim Leafs players. And it will happen again.

I’d think Barre-Boulet would be worth it for a bottom team too.

Weegar is a weird one. RHD who plays LD. Last year wasn’t a good defensive year for him, and he really needs to simplify his game some. I’d bet Sutter will get that out of him.

ABB would be claimed if he was a Leaf.

I know that because he's better than all the players we lost in the last couple years. And when Anderson gets claimed, we can revisit this.

Also, Weegar is 100% a RHD. He played a lot of LD though. EDIT: Someone beat me to it.

I'm surprised POJ was offered to all 31 teams with no takers for a late pick. Most teams probably know he's waiver bound after his bad pre-season.

Still, his AHL play and draft pedigree warrant a flyer and you'd think MTL would be a quick claim but they have Harris/Xhekaj competing bottom pair LD.

A 7/8D isn't moving the needle but with mmgt rumoured to be looking at waivers, Beaudin/POJ have better upside than most that make it to TORs range on the wire.

Hahaha....and I corrected mine while you were posting.

The fear on Weegar is that he now fancies himself as an offensive D, based on his success being pushed there last year when Ekblad went down. Not only will this up his pay demands to the $6-7mil range, but it came at the cost of his defensive game suffering. We don’t need offensive Weegar, we need the older version.

That's a communication thing for sure if you're acquiring him.

He actually is an offensive D tbh. Just doesn't get PP time.

There are some decent depth guys on that list, but hardly anyone I am rushing to give an NHL spot even as an extra. I expect better guys to hit waivers, especially from the Leafs. I would rather keep Anderson and Mete than claim any of those guys, and I would certainly welcome a waiver addition who can upgrade Mete.
Imagine in the same draft we get Auston Matthews, Vancouver fans got Olli Juolevi and drafted him AHEAD of Matthew Tkachuk.

Never thought he was as good as hyped, I was pro Sergachev in that draft, watched a LOT of London games because of Marner, where he hardly improved in his draft year ... but I never thought he'd be on waivers in 5 years

I remember watching a lot of the Knights because of Marner that year...

I always wondered how the hell Mete was ranked behind Juolevi, I didn't see it, he wasn't Maatta.

4x4 is maybe something to consider

It'll depend on Robertson and Knies this year, even Amirov.

If they all have strong years or Amirov rebounds, LW is a strong part of our prospect pool and they can get by on lesser cost guys at the position.

I could potentially see the Leafs actually going longer term like 6 or even 7 years with Bunting if it lowers the aav enough. Similar to what the Bolts just did with Nick Paul. A deal around 3-3.5 mil aav at that term would give him 20+ million in his bank which would be hard to pass up given his career earnings to date.

Bunting's number will start with a 5 if his production lands in last year's ballpark.

Seems rich and not enough term, he's only had 1 great season.

Unless it's to protect the Stars in case there is decline too.

Interesting deal for Robertson. AAV is reasonable, but inline with a four year deal. It takes them right to the cap limit for now, without going over and needing to move players. You’d want to lock up a player like Robertson longer, but there just wasn’t the money to do so… so he got a contract that pays him until Benn’s contract expires.

A 6, 7, 8 year term would have cost more and potentially quite a bit more, but they didn’t have the room. Should his performance continue to be great, he’ll be in line for a huge contract when his and Benn’s expires.

This is basically, this is all we can afford until Benn expires, then you will really get paid.

I tried to choose my words carefully and say "where this is headed" acknowledging that this most likely isn't the current situation but could be heading there. I'd say that another injury set back for Muzzin early in the season may put Dubas and co. in action to LTIR him for as long as they can so the team can be solidified with an element that's more likely to deliver through the season into the playoffs.

I brought up the Lupul situation because I believe most of us understand the player's perspective as a competitive athlete who wishes to deliver on the ice. The player often just thinks he can play through and get stronger as time passes because that's what they did when they were young and vital. Most don't know when they're done until they're told that they're done.

Off topic slightly: man alive when Lupul was on (I guess healthy) he was a monster on the ice even in spurts with the Leafs, a skilled power forward who could literally win games on his own.
Lupul biggest factor was not his ability to score on the ice, but rather, when he scores off the ice.....
