Pageau is a solid third line center. Hes just the kind of depth player that you win with. Hes tenacious, busts his ass, and can explode offensively when the going gets tough.

And more importantly, he seems to want to stay in ottawa. The senators desperately need that kind of atmosphere in the locker room. Like they had with Phillips, alfie, Neil, hossa and redden.
He might price himself out of Ottawa though. Not many 3rd line centres similar to Pageau make above $4M. If he wants to stay here long term a contract like Eller would be ideal.

Would you take Backes for a 1st? Assuming he'd allow the trade to the Sens. I'd imagine that 3 mil in signing bonus for this year has been paid

100%, a 1st for some money is fine by me. Would be nice to mentor the young guys too. Melnyk would NEVER go for it though.

I would imagine that the Bruins would have to take Boedker back for the Sens to be interested.

Backes only makes 1M in salary this year. We could retain half of Boedker (4M cap hit but 3M salary). Melnyk saves 500k this year while getting a 1st. Cap space means nothing to us.

The only issue is that he also has next year. Maybe they could try to pump and dump him at the deadline to a contender for a crap pick/prospect. Hell maybe even retain on him too.

Backes+2020 Protected 1st for Boedker would be fair.

Bruins free up 8 million in total cap space. This isn't LTIRetirement cap space. It's pure cap.

Ottawa takes on 1 million in additional money over the lifetime of both contracts. Although, if Backes plays for the Senators both years, they get most of that 1 million back because he'll take up a roster spot which already has a marginal cost of at least 650k. So assuming both players would spend the entirety of their contracts in the NHL, the marginal cost to Ottawa is only 450k or less.

Another idea would be Bobby Ryan (half retained) straight up for David Backes. The Bruins save 2.37 a season for the next two seasons at the expense of adding 3.625M to their cap three seasons from now. This is more efficient for Boston. Cap is more valuable for them now than it might be in 3 years because they know for sure they are up against the ceiling now. It also gives them an extra 4.02M+ of cap over that 3 year span. (Assuming Bobby plays in the NHL all 3 years and that the minimum they can dress a warm body is about 650k, yes I league minimum has gone up, gotta refresh my memory on the new minimum).

In this scenario, the Senators save 5.25M over the lifetime of the contracts minus whatever the cost of the replacement body is for Ryan in year 3.

Except if we are trading Ryan at 50% retained we should actually be looking to bring back some value in a trade. I would move Ryan for another bad contract without retention though - he is a horrible fit for this team now and going forward

I'd take Backes with a 1st easily, those types of deals are the exact ones we should be looking for

I absolutely would: was a captain, helps the tank, get another 1st rounder and allows to keep a player in Belleville.

Problem is, our reality is that money going to Backes likely makes it harder for us to retain our best players. At that point, not wanting to take on Backes is logical if unfortunate: if the decision is between "get a first and Backes or make a solid offer and potentially sign Chabot/Tkachuk", it is an easy one to make.

I don't think Ryan has any value, even half retained.

Would a team have signed Ryan to a 3 year 3.625M AAV contract this past summer had he been a free agent? If the answer is no, he has negative value. I think the answer is no.

I get the context is different if we're taking back a bad contract, but in that scenario it's mutually beneficial. This is assuming we are a budget team. As outlined in my post above, we save a few million in money. This is money we can put toward extending our "the kids are alright". The Bruins save some cap. Ryan is not going to figure in much for us. It might even be a positive for both sides to move on since there's so much baggage there.

Yeah, I'd love if we could get a 2nd round pick from Boston in the trade or something, but realistically I think it would be looked at as a mutually beneficial swap that doesn't constitute any compensation beyond the salary we're saving.

I would also prefer to get a 1st rounder and take Backes without Boston taking back a contract or with them taking back something minimal like Boedker. I was just brainstorming.

Of course - not my cash. Having the BOS and SJ 1RD starts to get us close to the possibility of drafting Laf and By (or whoever).

2nd overall —> BOS 1RD + SJ 1RD + young controllable puck moving dman + 40-50 pt forward.

Since 2005 no GM has knowingly traded a top 4 pick. Add in the quality of this year's top prospects it wouldn't happen.

I think to get a 1st ... we have to give something back. Not sure any flavor of Boedker gets it done.. but retaining on him as you suggest makes sense I would think we would need to give them a (3/4 rd) pick or a B prospect.. and no salary/cap back

Laine could be on the block

if so the sens should be throwing guys like JBD, Thompson, Norris at the jets

though i doubt melnyk can affoerd him

I'd make anything but Chabot, Tkachuk and Ottawa's own 2020 1st rounder available. Doubt Winnipeg bites though.

They will have a hard enough time with the Chabot contracts bonuses, can't imagine they could fit a similar deal in Laine. If there's any method to this madness, then the cap circumvention can be assumed to be for trying to squirrel away enough cash for Chabot's bonuses. I can't imagine they can just double that out of nowhere.

I see a bit of Laine-Ottawa trade chatter on Twitter. Is this purely discussion or has it been mentioned by someone credible (for whatever that's worth)?

Not only is the cost to acquire Laine prohibitive, he also seems like one of the last guys this management group would target (questions about compete, work ethic, character, ect). It's not that the organization won't acquire these players (see Duclair, Anthony), but given the high price (both in trade cost and future contract) I doubt Laine is their guy.

Pure fantasy, unless you consider Incarcerated Bob credible.
Yeah, we didn't spend the last 2 years stripping away all the skill from the roster and circumventing the cap floor to go out and get a guy like Laine.

The odds of Ottawa going after 1. An expensive player and 2. A very skilled player is practically nil. I think the odds of us winning the cup this year are about the same as Dorion picking up Laine.

I’d offer some 5 piece combo of Formenton, Balcers, Chlapik, Abramov, Davidsson, Pinto, Wolanin, Thomson, JBD, Tierney, Pageau, Duclair, Top 10 protected 1st. Not willing to offer any of Batherson, Brown, Norris, White, Chabot, Tkachuk.
