Well, what you'd have to look at is why Edmonton would pay anything of value for a 33 year old Bouwmeester or a 31 year old Garrison? Both of those guys have seen their production fall off a cliff. They're not difference makers anymore.

Because we have limited options and we need to a couple of steady veterans on the back end in the worst way.

Mark Fayne was a steady vet. Andrew Ference was a steady vet. Eric Gryba is a steady vet. This team doesn't need to overpay for 'steady vets' on the back nine of their careers. They need a Byfuglien/Shattenkirk/Hamonic. Difference makers.

If we're moving RNH or Eberle, the sights have to be set higher.

People like to reference Columbus moving Nash for bits and pieces as some success story; to me, that's a massive cautionary tale.

We wouldn't have to move RNH or Eberle in that case, though. Picks and prospects would probably suffice.

For sure, and with a new building, great coach, generational player, and ringer GM we should accept nothing less

Then we circle back around to salary. 5.4 million caphit for JayBo until he's 36/37, caphit for Garrison until he's 34/35. We'd HAVE to move a guy like Eberle to afford them.

Garrison is on pace for 12 points. He's playing 18 minutes a night.

Frankly I don't really see the lure in either one.

The problem is I don't think two of those guys (Buff and Shattenkirk) want to sign here and the other is probably going to Winnipeg.

Sami Vantanen might be movable for a Jordan Eberle or something like that.

J-Bow is UFA in two years at which point he'll be 34. And he's playing 23 minutes a night on the top pairing of a Cup contender right now. With Nikitin and likely Schultz and Ference off the books next season, we could easily afford the salary. The lure is, he's (at minimum) a top four d with a contract that fits in the McDavid/Drai ELC window and would cost very little to acquire. Simple.

Brian Campbell might be another guy to look at, we could offer high dollars for a lower term.

So your guess is that going into next Season Edmonton still is a defensive wasteland? and since Schultz is not on the list I guess they sign him? Which means what to Edmonton's inaugural season in their new arena...more of the same?

Calgary gets Doan, Lucic, Gaustad, Gagner, Reimer, Downie, Lovejoy while Vancouver gets Staal, Goligoski, Backes, Ladd, Nielsen, Ott, Torres? I doubt it. There will be changes in Edmonton. Count on it.

But, to be fair, VAN and CGY are probably going to sign all the UFAs we want. Manifest destiny or whatever.

Curious how Oilers fans feel about this one.

Pouliot. If the team were offered a 5th-7th round pick for him, and we don't retain, would you let him go for more cap space this summer? Or would you rather keep him?

I'd rather keep him. He plays well with McDavid and alright with Eberle/RNH.

We're unlikely to find a 20-goal-ish winger on the UFA market for less.

The question is what big bodied 25 goal, 45 point guy, is going to be available for less than Pouliot, while still in his prime years? And he's got to have chemistry with guys on our team.

There's no way I move Pouliot. He was one of MacT's good moves
