This isn't true at all. He earns a backup goaltender's paycheck and a team in need of a backup would be fortunate to have him.Yep. Mike Smith is a black hole. Absolutely untradeable.

Find a team that will take his contract and ship him out, brother. I guarantee you if he hits waivers nobody claims him. This isn't true at all. He earns a backup goaltender's paycheck and a team in need of a backup would be fortunate to have him.
I find it funny that fans here are asking for a trade for a goalie when Koskinen's probably got one of the best save % and GAA in the league in the past 10 games. So what do we do now? Dump the hottest goalie in the league and downgrade for a cup winning goalie who is on the downswing? Oilers gonna do what Oiler fans demand. Make a trade to downgrade the team, yup, let's do just that.

Given the new Coaching staff and Koskinen suddenly emerging as a reliable goalie, the pressure is off until the actual day of the trade deadline.I find it funny that fans here are asking for a trade for a goalie when Koskinen's probably got one of the best save % and GAA in the league in the past 10 games. And Smith needs to play that next game so Koskinen can be properly rested.Given the new Coaching staff and Koskinen suddenly emerging as a reliable goalie, the pressure is off until the actual day of the trade deadline.
Let's not start throwing away 1st round pics just yet. The better Koskinen does, the more leverage Holland has because he doesn't look desperate.
This could all go to shit immediately next game, mind you.
Koskinen can do a few in a row. But yeah, he starts to buckle under a heavy workload. And Smith needs to play that next game so Koskinen can be properly rested.
The good news is im sure he'll have another vacation from HFOil and we wont have to see him for awhile.Says the guy who keeps suggesting to trade McDavid.
Koskinen should get no more than 16 starts for the remainder of the regular season. And that will probably wear him out completely.Koskinen can do a few in a row. But yeah, he starts to buckle under a heavy workload.
Exactly. He’s not consistent which is why a goalie is still needed. Mikko is a capable back upKoskinen can do a few in a row. But yeah, he starts to buckle under a heavy workload.
You aren't going to get that with a deadline patchjob. You're going to get an expensive question mark.Have you watched Koskinen his whole career in Edmonton. He always has these Highs which are followed by lows. We need CONSISTENCY. Not a good run for 10 games

Koskinen reeling in a streak of wins and good goaltending pretty much sums up what Jordan Binnington did a few years back. You just need to get hot at the right time. There were many instances where a hasbeen goalie came out of the woodwork for one playoff run. Ranford, Kirk McLean, Binnington, Matt Murray, Niemi, Tim Thomas, etc... I still recalled Niemi winning a cup then disappearing right after.Given the new Coaching staff and Koskinen suddenly emerging as a reliable goalie, the pressure is off until the actual day of the trade deadline.

Wow, I just had a look and found this:
Tim Thomas
Drafted by Quebec Nordiques
- round 9 #217 overall 1994 NHL Entry Draft
At the time when he won the cup, he might be the only active player left that was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques.
You are right. Crazy how things turned out. Avs getting Thibault then flipping for Roy basically sewered Thomas' career for over a decade.Hejduk still played a couple years after that. That was the final season for Foote and Drury.

Look at Tim Thomas, a late 30 yr old goalie who was a career backup suddenly turned into a Stanley Cup hero. If Koskinen puts in a run for us and win the conn smythe, we can probably dump him for 3 first round picks in the summer. He would be labelled as a cost-controlled goalie for one more season.

Why not waive Smith, run with Koskinen and Skinner rest of the season?
I think it's partly this but it's also partly because they're too stubborn to admit that signing Smith was a mistake.Because our front office isn't smart enough to realize the most obvious solution is probably the correct one.
Dying on that hill for the stupidest of reasons.I think it's partly this but it's also partly because they're too stubborn to admit that signing Smith was a mistake.
