Judging by their board, it doesn't seem NJD fans are at all happy about this. If Allen plays like crap, he always could be a placeholder part of the return in a bigger move this summer.

So the NJ plot thickens... they traded Vanecek for Kahkonen. And at least Kahkonen has an expiring contract. His numbers on the woeful Sharks may be more forgiveable than some. So they could be back to just Allen + Daws/Schmid next season after all.

Well he isn't going to be a GM too much longer if he thinks the rest of the league should just give him players for what HE thinks is fair. Explains why he is still stuck with crap goalies.
He failed to address it last offseason, when prices and availability would have been more favorable. He failed to address it 3-4 months ago, when he knew it was an issue and a team like us might have been more amenable to doing a deal. Waits til the deadline when there's like 3 goalies remotely available and all are on playoff-contending teams. What the heck did he expect?

I want an elite, young first-line center in Nashville. Why won't anyone sell us one for a fair price instead of trying to gouge us for assets?

Everyone in NJ thinks he will still go out and get a good goalie in the offseason and I bet he rolls into the season with Allen as his starter because he simply refuses to give up anything of value to gain something of value.

I guess Fitzgerald is a bit frustrated with Trotz.

It would definitely be silly to be talking about us. Our team has 75 pts and is comfortably in a playoff spot. His has 66 pts and is basically eliminated. There can't be any realistic expectation that we'd trade our #1 goalie in that situation. Maybe it's Calgary he's talking about? :dunno:

Don't think so, from what we can tell its was Calgary's owners the shot their trade down with NJ.

Doesn't necessarily preclude it being Calgary. Or both Calgary and us; it could just be Generic Kvetching over the old saw of "a GM sees you drowning, they'll throw you an anchor."

It's silly to be talking about any of the teams he talked to. He left an obvious roster hole unaddressed until the 11th hour and then seems to have balked because other GMs placed as much value on not wanting to trade their guys as he placed on not wanting to trade his. Comes across as a whiner.

"There weren't a lot of obvious upgrades available at this point and the cost to acquire those guys, understandbly, would have made some hard decisions for us about guys we think are a strong part of our future. With where we are at in the standings, I think Jake coming in helps to stabilize us and take a run til the end of the year and will also help us evaluate where the roster sits moving forward," is what he should have said.

Trotz didn't move Saros because he didn't like what the returns were. He'll never get what he wants because while Saros is a star in this league, goalies don't fetch a ton in trades.

If Trotz truly wants to make a statement and go after the high-end center he's clamoring for, he'll need to package Saros or Askarov, use his draft capital, and possibly throw in a prospect of ours to acquire what he wants.

It would be a mistake to move Askarov as his ceiling is higher and cost-controlled. This will be the off-season that defines Trotz as a GM as well as the next 10 years or so of the Preds organization. Get it right without giving up a ton of the future that's in Milwaukee and this team is set. Get it wrong and whoa nelly.

The problem of course is you'd like to get Askarov at least a year as a backup before just throwing him to the wolves. Doing that means you either keep Saros, at least until the TDL next year and risk losing him for nothing, or else sign Lanky for another year with the plan being for him to be the starter. Problem is as well as Lanky has played that may not be an option

I agree with not throwing Askarov to the wolves. If you can pull off the trade you want for Saros, re-sign Lankinen, let him and Askarov split starts then give Askarov the reigns in 2025-2026.

There would be a couple stopgap UFA goalies we could go with this offseason should we chose to trade Saros:
Kahkonen
Samsonov
Lankinen
Nedeljkovic
Wedgewood
Stolarz
Campbell (if bought out)

Or if you trade saros to a place with a goalie like ottawa or jersey, you may end up taking Korpisalo (retained or with incentive) or allen back which fixes the stopgap situation anyways.
