You can't just strip the entire 3rd line without replacements.

Who replaves Kerfoot at 3C

At how productive Kerfoot was I don't doubt that Engvall could easily replace him and I think Engvall would be more of a factor even tho his offense will always be less than Kerfoot.

Considering how pathetic TO's 3rd line has been I don't think finding replacements would be that difficult and could be considerably cheaper.

A possible 3rd line for next year Robertson, Engvall, Barabanov, mabe not an upgrade but probably no worse than what TO had last year and with each at less than a 1 mil. per(almost) there'd be $s to spend elsewhere. These are just the TO in house possible replacements, there are probably even better potential replacement(s) in FA and again cheaper than TO's 3rd liners last year. Or how about some veteran players who are willing to play in TO at a discount like Spezza, Thornton, Perry. A veteran line like that wouldn't be 1st line worthy but might be better than most if not all other team's 3rd lines.

Outside of Muzzin, I'd like to see the entire d corp replaced and that includes, especially, Rielly. Rielly can't defend, has little defensive aptitude and blows hot and cold where his cold is Winterpeg cold.

Im not even sure if I have the stomach to see Dubas pick the 15th over-all.
He has often cited his philosophy of choosing the best player, regardless of position.
He either does this and possibly not address need or he does the opposite...which makes him show his desperation.
Not sure what I dislike more, an idiot or a p***y.

Hard to figure out what you're saying, Dubie will pick the best player available but he also has shown that he prefers lots of choices so he will trade down if possible.

If Dubie does utilize that draft choice, he won't be addressing any need that TO has now so picking the BPA in the draft makes sense because he/we don't know what need TO will have in about 3 years when the drafted player might be ready to play in the NHL.

Personally I think Dubie should trade the pick for an upgrade on the present roster, this might be a desperate move but it was possible TO wouldn't have made the playoffs this year.

Engvall isn't a center, and Rielly is BY FARour best D

All pro sport execs/coaches are fired eventually.

Yes he will be judged by his body of work. I agreed that Kadri needed to be traded and absolutely hated it was for Barrie.

I'm not going to send him to slaughter for me disagreeing with him. I need a larger body of work. No GM make all the right decisions.

This was a good trade as most and yourself agree.

Probably Dubis too, remember this was not his first choice for a Kadri trade either. Kadri turned one down.

Rielly was easily our second best player against Columbus. The only reason our 3rd line was able to sustain zone time with their complete inability to cycle, was because Rielly made astute pinches to keep the play alive. And he did so while babysitting crap RDs for nearly 30 minutes per game. Trading him would be asinine.

I really like this trade and think it accomplished 3 things.

1. Got a much needed 1st, very close to the position of the one lost
2. Got a good prospect to help the diminishing prospect pool
3. Got much needed cap space

1 out of 3 I would have been mildly satisfied. 2 out of 3 I'd have been quite happy. But all 3? I think this was a great trade and hopefully set some positive things in motion.

Kapanen had the wheels but that is really it. Had tunnel vision, mediocre skill, horrible iq. No clue where the sandpaper aspect comes, that to me is grasping at straws... This really isn't a big loss for the team.

I think as a fan base we are really bad at crapping on a guy when he is here and then the second he goes we turn on a dime and say in fact he was great and he shouldn't have been given up.

Ya, he scored some huge goals. The playoff clincher. The OT goal vs. Washington. That go-ahead goal against Boston. You can't take those away, big moments, awesome memories. I really wonder if that contributes to some of the disappointment some are showing now that he is gone.

I really think that 1st is amazing currency no matter how you slice it. Whether you make the pick or dangle it, it is awesome that it was acquired. I think some just see it as a future maybe, which it is, but I wouldn't underestimate how much stock it has as currency right now.

Given the way the Free Agency period has unfolded, did we got really lucky that we manage to clear cap and gain 1st and prospect for Kap?

Under rated move by Dubas to strike early?

It's not luck or underrated - this was a great move and I think we all called it so at the time. Pitt must be kicking themselves - they could have just signed Duclair for a similar if not smaller cap hit, and kept the 1st.

Outstanding move when you look at what other teams have had to pay to dump cap. If Dubas had waited as long as Vegas did with Schmidt, he would’ve gotten more like a 5th than a 1st and Hallander.

With that being said, I am still a bit worried about our 3rd line, it looks potentially terrible with Kap and Johnsson traded. It’ll be something like Robertson/Kerfoot/Simmonds or Robertson/Kerfoot/Barbanov, both of which seem real, real weak. But really, Dubas was down to 2 viable options:
  1. Improve the D, but deal Kappy and AJ, leading the 3rd line weak
  2. Trade Marner. Would give us the space to improve the D and have solid forward depth, but ... at the cost of Marner
I guess you could argue dealing Nylander was an option, but it seems clearly worse than dealing Kappy and Johnsson (Marner at least would free up a lot more cap space). Dubas was in a tough place between the COVID cap and the massive contracts he gave to Matthews/JT/Marner, ultimately he made the best of it. And lines 1/2/4 look great, so hopefully a weak 3rd line can be minimized.

I guess you could argue dealing Nylander was an option, but it seems clearly worse than dealing Kappy and Johnsson (Marner at least would free up a lot more cap space). He was in a tough place between the fixed cap and the massive contracts he gave to Matthews/JT/Marner, ultimately he made the best of it.

Our 3rd line is technically not as strong as it was with Johnsson and Kapanen on it, but I don't think it is necessarily weak. Kerfoot is a good 3C. I think Vesey and Simmonds, now that they are on stronger teams, can each put up 15 goals and 35 points (assuming they get some PP time). Our 4th line should be pretty decent as well.

The main thing is that we have 4 lines that look pretty strong defensively while also being strong possession players capable of putting up some offense. Hopefully the added size between Simmonds and Vesey up front will also be helpful.
