Leafs Home Board
Here is another take on this trade, which I would guess aligns with a portion of Leafs fan base.

With the Kasperi Kapanen trade, Kyle Dubas sets the table for a fascinating offseason ahead

The first big trade of what is sure to be a busy Toronto Maple Leafs offseason is now in the books.

Yesterday’s Kasperi Kapanen trade felt a little weird at first knowing most of us were in the mindset for a few years now that a Kapanen deal would be a hockey trade to immediately improve a weakness (i.e. defense) on the current roster, but it could well prove to be a good bit of creativity by Kyle Dubas to get this type of trade done as early as he got it done.

At least in my view, the 15th overall draft pick and some cap flexibility — they still need more of the latter, to be sure — is almost certainly going to carry more value than Kasperi Kapanen at $3.2 million when the offseason really kicks off (this is to say nothing of the prospect they fetched in the deal as well). There are too many teams that are going to be feeling the squeeze and will be shedding salary to deal with the flat cap ceiling and tightened internal budgets.

If you’re the deep-pocketed, in-a-Cup-window Leafs and you’re looking to make use of what little space and futures you do have to upgrade the roster with an eye towards a deep playoff run in 2020-21, Dubas’ urgency to jump into the trade waters early and set the table makes a lot of sense. In any offseason, I’m pretty convinced a 15th overall, a B or B+ prospect, and a little cap space to manoeuvre carries more value than a $3.2 million 15-20 goal middle-six winger.

The alternative would have been to sit around and try to swing a hockey trade that might never materialize involving some of the team’s second-tier forwards — Kapanen, Johnsson, Kerfoot — for defense help, or to flip one or two of these pieces for futures at the draft to open space ahead of free agency. Now, improving flexibility and storing some gun powder for later is not the same thing as acquiring — via trade or free agency — a defenseman that can play tough minutes for you capably. That’s where the really hard part comes in. It has to be the first of many instances of creativity from Dubas if he’s going to achieve his goal of improving the overall roster.

That's a bit simplistic. What if Kap never plays a game for them and they win the cup? Ehat is he's a bit player on their 4th line and ends up bought out? Obviously that's an extreme, but it illustrates to the point.

Right now, the general consensus is he overpaid for a 3rd liner in Toronto.

He could be a fading GM who is making desperate moves whole the team is slowly crumbling around him. Many would say that makes him a bad GM at the end. I'm not sure he's there yet, but he's made questionable moves lately.
I agree but Pens is a better team on paper today than three weeks ago.
As of now, he overpaid for Kap but like I said, even if Kap maintained his level and the Pens win the Cup, that’s a good trade even if the 15th overall become Larkin and Hallander become ROR.
The point I was making was not Kap being a bad trade for Pens or not but rather is JR a good GM or not. To say that JR is a bad GM because of this trade is the same as saying Dubas is a great GM due to this trade. Ultimately Team success will determine the greatness of each GM.

Ni have been out of the loop the last few days, I don't know if I like this or not,mI mean wing is the position we are deepest at and I think we all expected Kappunto be traded but I have mixed feelings on the return, I like the 1st round pick, but this deal does nothing to improve our RD situation and kind of creates a hole and anybody that has read my posts for the past 3 years knows I don't like creating holes in the roster for no reason.

Now the off season has barely started and there is A LO T of time before the season starts but am iffy on this

Trading Kappy is a good thing, Kerfoot should be next and Johnsson as well. These are 3 players who can score but their value beyond the goals and assists is minimal. They brought nothing to the playoffs/qualifier series and were totally overwhelmed by any line Columbus played against them. I wouldn't describe them as doggedly determined but rather as excitedly opportunistic, not able to create opportunities but willingly able to act when opportunity presents itself. Their brand of hockey isn't a winning formula and very definitely not playoff worthy.

TO is now negotiating with Mikheyev who I feel is the same type of player as Kappy, he's not a 3 mil. player and I don't feel he's a 2 mil. player, I hope Dube doesn't overpay him as well.

You can't just strip the entire 3rd line without replacements.

Who replaves Kerfoot at 3C

I like on the main boards how upset people are at the Kappy trade. It’s more seen as a screw up by JR rather than any props to KD. I’m happy our GM is underrated by other teams fans, I just wish our own fan base had more faith.
Faith has to be earned, not blindly given.
Why do you feel he’s underrated ?

Simply put, Rutherford overpaid. You can justify anyway you like. But there is nobody who believes that he slightly out bidded another offer.

He's like the guy at the auction that just yells out an absurd bid and everyone in complete shock walks away shaking there head.

The point is he shouldn't have costed that much and no one else would pay it.

Rutherford has a resume. Dubas carries around a bottle of mouthwash.

True. Rutherford knows that the Pens window is closing fast so unless he makes bold moves it’s rebuild time.

Not sure trading Crosby would sit well with the fans at this point.

There are other teams in similar situations needing to dump salaries which KD can exploit if he plays his cards right.

I think that’s been beaten to death and most of our fan base still have different opinions. Hard to change minds with little evidence for both opinions. Definitely can point to good and bad, I feel one outweighs the other and I hope the gap widens as we proceed.

Dubas has a volatile track record thus far. I give him full marks for the Kapanen trade, but he's also made his share of mistakes.

I think this trade is only part #1 and we will have to wait for part #2 to evaluate this 2 step middle man process to see how it improves the current teams competitiveness.

Believing Dubas couldn't deal Kapanen for a top 4 Dman he liked in a 1-1 type trade,he went the about this the round about way.

1) Trade Kapanen for futures to create cheaper and more desirable trade assets.
2) Trade those assets like the 1st round pick + other stuff to now land that top 4 Dman.

So judgement for me will wait until I see what I believe is the 2nd part of this deal still pending and counting this as in progress and end result TBD.

You liked Willy at C vs cbj?

We went from 3 lines to 1...
I think he was talking non playoff Willy against fast skating flow game teams where he looks like best guy on ice. Canes, Bruins, CBJs are bad teams due to small ice trap styles for Willy and quite a few other Leafs really.

I've never claimed it was a bad trade nor criticized him for making it.

In fact this helps offset the really bad trade he made by dumping Marleau and so recovering the 1st helps soften that.

However I think this is the precursor to more trades to come and I'm not hopeful that draft pick survives if the right trade comes along to strengthen the current team.

Dubas needs results now and dealing away Kapanen for futures and weakening the current team does not improve the team on the ice for next year.
Im not even sure if I have the stomach to see Dubas pick the 15th over-all.
He has often cited his philosophy of choosing the best player, regardless of position.
He either does this and possibly not address need or he does the opposite...which makes him show his desperation.
Not sure what I dislike more, an idiot or a p***y.

Who replaves Kerfoot at 3C

With Tavares and Matthews eating up almost 40 minutes per game, I don't think we really need a strong 3rd center. I think we'd be better off spending less at that position and using the savings elsewhere.

There's quite a few low end 3rd line centers and high end 4th line centers out there this year.
