The Leafs backup goalie isnt the problem. Team defense is. Anderson could be the Vezina winner every year if he played on a team who didnt hang him out to dry. Trading for another backup goalie before that gets fixed will result in the same thing. New York is dealing with the same thing basically but they are only in year 2 of the rebuild so that's expected. I wonder what that team would look like now if Lamoriello had been GM still instead of Dubas.

In addition to being the youngest team in the league, about half the roster is new this year. Their first 7-8 games were brutal, and have been steadily improving since then with the occasional hiccup.

Yeah, I agree they're still not great, but far from as bad as the 10 worst teams from the last 12 years

Its less than a quarter of the sample size of the teams you are ranking them against.

It's not like we're talking total stats. We're talking /60 so we can compare them to a full season, obviously.

20+ games is a decent sample, despite what you think.

teams go on streaks.

A streak is very likely to skew the number in a small sample size

you need a full season to see if such streaks are the norm, or an aberration.


/60 stats are not immune to small sample sizes.

If you really want to make an accurate comparison, you need to take the xGF% in all 18 game portions of all seasons of all teams from 07-08 until now.
