They are signing their core to short term deals to win in a 5 year window like the hawks and Pens did. This part I like.

What I don't like is the massive overpay doing this.

so you are giving your team only 5 years to compete ?
I don't get why the 5 years, he is your #1c for 20+ years why can't you sign him for 8 years. I have a feeling like MAtthews will steal Toronto after his 5 years

You have literally no idea what you're talking about lmao.

Nah. Marner and Tavares are better than Matthews that is undeniable. And Andersen is more important to the Leafs than Matthews (just ask the Avalanche with their season going to down the tubes due to goaltending. Or the Flames. Rittich has single handly saved their season).

IF... and it's still a pretty big IF ... but they win a cup... I think a lot of people will forget about this.

It'll be interesting to see what other RFAs want now .... also the pressure is completely on the player to perform now.

You can't compare it to Ovie, Sid, McDavid. The money players make is always going up every year.

I wonder how long it takes for the gleeful chuckles at Leaf misfortune to turn to concerned head scratches when people start to consider the ramifications of a potentially major shift in the way RFA's are paid.

The contracts 93% bonuses. Arent u supposed to get a discount if you do that? Guess the Leafs financial capital didnt help at all on the Avg.

Guess Dubas is gonna have to sign Marner to a 2 year term if he wants to keep him under 11.....

Barf.

With that cap hit there should be a hell of a lot more term than 5 years. Brutal. Not surprising though.

It's fair value for his AAV based on comparables, but it's terrible for term.

11.634 on an 83 million cap next year (if reports are true) is identical to malkin's 2nd contract

Yea it's the term that's crazy. 11.634 is a little high for him maybe, but 5 years? He's going to be UFA at 26 and will get the maximum from somebody.

If he stays at the same level he’s at now, this will look bad. If he become a perennial 50 and 50 guy... this will be just fine.

I don't even think $11.6 million is even that bad for Matthews, I had him pegged at $11 million so this value isn't bad. The problem here is that he's at $11.6 million with only buying out 1 UFA year, that's not a good contract. They gave Matthews an 8 year, 4 UFA year cap hit for a contract that was only 5 years and 1 UFA year, that's not a good deal.

This is brutal contract for Toronto and awesome for Matthews. They couldn't get more term even though they overpaid? Bad just bad.

If it's 11.5 it should be an 8 year deal.

How can he justify 11.5 on a 5 year deal?

He can justify it because the Leafs were willing to give it to him.

How can Dubas justify giving it to him without the extra 3 years is certainly another question.
