It's disappointing to see their young players not willing to take a little less to maximize their franchise's chances of winning

And 5 years? If he's not interested in being here for his entire career - or he plans to seek a max contract in 5 years - I'd rather he just be traded

Being a team player doesn't just apply to the on-ice stuff

Meh, as a leafs fan I'm totally ok with it. Bobby Mack broke down our cap during last nights game. All is well in leafs land.

Yes, but he put the cap at 85 millions, and signed Kapanen at 2,75 M/year.

Not sure it is how it's gonna play out.

For the record, the majority of Leaf fans hate this deal. Absolutely disgusting Matthews bent over the Leafs and had a good time.

Hope he never touches the C as long as he is in the city.
Oh get over yourself, its not that bad of a deal. Could have been a lot worse.

I love this has gone from:

  • Matthews will be offer sheeted
to
  • Matthews will get 13-14M and is over paid
to
  • Matthews will be offer sheeted
to
  • Matthews is over paid at 11.634M

No matter what so many people were trying to find a bad angle and not matter what this wouldn't be good for the Leafs. Spin away Leafs haters, spin away!

Matthews AAV seems "okay" (really not that great considering McDavid was 12.5 and Matthews hasn't come close to McDavid numbers) but the issue is the term. At 11.5 there's no reason not to get 8 years for him.

Hahah please.

- Made more than McDavid when you factor in the cap hit with term

- All in signing bonus so that should have gotten a discount

- No major awards unlike all the comparables being used (Ovi, Sid, and McDavid)

- Walks him right to UFA

Garbage. **** him.

Your hate is directed at wrong person. Matthews is doing whats best for him..as anyone would.

Your GM blew this.

Nice try. He makes only like 900k less than Mcdavid but 3 less years. Leafs got bent.

here;'s what i'll say...wish it was 8 years, but if Dubas gets all the kids signed and still has the cap room to fill other holes...then i am going to enjoy the 5 year run.

Exactly. The posters who always twist things negatively will have a field day but the rest will be happy it is signed and done

2nd highest paid player and a UFA at 26

there's no spin on that

Not all contracts are signed under the same circumstances, rising cap being the most important. We have 5 years of one of the best players in the game (+Tavares for 6 + whatever Marner gets) and likely more. I think we will be ok with that.

Speak for yourself, you have no idea what the landscape of the league will be in 5 years if the cap goes up and this could be a sweetheart deal.

This is typical HF, people were hoping he’d get McDavid money or more and now that he didn’t it’s moaning anyways.

Pretty much identical to the contract Rick Nash signed at the same age in 2005 by cap hit %. Both came in at 5 years, 13.85% of the cap. Below other similar contracts of Crosby (2008 - 5 years of 17.3% of cap) and Malkin (2009 - 5 years of 15.34% of cap) but above Stamkos (2011 - 5 years of 11.66%).

Matthews' contract looks just fine in that group.

They didn't allow him to get offer sheeted which is smart.

The deal is short, which is the only downside for the Leafs.

Welcome to Cap hell Leafs.

Good Luck with the dispersal Next season.

You will feel what the Oilers are feeling right now. No way out if someone underperforms

Not a fan of this. Walks him almost exactly to UFA.
Even a 6 year deal would have brought him to the end of the Tavares deal leaving us with room to resign him.
You have to think Marner's deal will be 6 years to do just that.

McDavid for the cost of Marleau and Zaitsev.

Awful contract. Would be fair (maybe even a bit high) if it was an 8 year deal.

6 years would have been better since their window will be the next 6-7 years with their core, don't think this contract's term really affects anything too much in terms of winning with Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Anderson, Nylander, Reilly.
