Who's he been playing with on the Leafs?

Gauthier full time and him Ennis and Moore rotate in and out on the 4th. He’s been very meh but I think he needs some time as he had a awful family tragidy this year and he hasn’t played much. He does show to have some nice tools

Would like to see what he can do in the top six. Seems pretty scrappy but also prone to big mistakes. I don't see him flourishing as a 4th liner.

1. 3 spots to fill for ~8 million
2. Trade OZ, Brown, Johnsson for those spots or picks.
3. Marleau retires, Leafs trade cap hit.

It's a risk free deal cap wise since he can be buried and they'd get his entire hit back.

Good signing even if Nic Pecan doesn't break out there. Low risk/high reward.

Petan .775
Goat .675
Moore .775
Holl .675
Sparks .75
Dermott .863
Rosen .75

= 5.263 for 7 roster spots.

If you assume Brown's dealt for a pick/prospect and Hainsey walks, you're only paying 163k more for those spots.

He’s a warm body, if he hurts them too bad defensively down to the A. Good kid though
Yeah, it is no coincidence that a $750k cap hit contract can be entirely buried in the minors. Literally zero risk by Toronto here so it is hard to complain

Possible.

Honestly, I'm surprised he didn't take more time to see what his options were in the off season.
Why wait? 2 years at just above NHL minimum is pretty much all he could hope for. Now he has a couple years of NHL salary. I was expecting him to be moving off to a landing spot somewhere in Europe so this is much better for him.

Not bad for depth and you can’t argue with the price. They’re going to need guys on cheap contracts who can play and hold their own. Gives them the room to pay thier big guns.

I think as time progresses we;re going to see a lot more of this, highly paid stars surrounded by a cheap players. A 10 million dollar player with a 1 million dollar player ends up being a better bet than having two players worth 5.5.

Opportunity to earn a real top 6 spot. He is not a top 2 Centre on the Leafs.

I would just expect him to see what is available.

At this point he takes a NHL salary especially at 2 years. No one was going to offer more.
Why does it have to be more?

I am talking about opportunity. I doubt he has given up on his NHL career the same way you have.

Agreed. The trick of the GMs is not going to be finding the stars but rather the right guys that can play to fill out the bottom 6 and bottom pair roles on the team so you can pay the stars.

He has a team willing to sign him for 2 years. That is pretty much the most he can hope for as opportunity. His opportunity is to keep playing in the NHL for 2 years. Why take a chance scrambling to land somewhere in the off season if you have this on the table?

I don't think I can explain this any differently than I have.

I'm curious to see how the NHLPA addresses it, as a whole they can't be thrilled with the stars taking up more and more of the salary cap.

I mean what can they do? As long as teams are willing to pay and there is a cap that’s alwyas going to be.

The underpaid players can refuse to sign a new CBA, they vastly outnumber the stars. Anyways interesting times as they say.

I actually saw something recently that alot of agents and some players were mad at the last CBA. And that players selfishly gave in. Stars today are basically being paid the same as the top players 15 years ago. Albeit there is a salary cap now.
