How do you know that if the Islanders were competitive and the Leafs sucked that he would have resigned with the Islanders. It looks bad that he strung the Islanders along with no intention of resigning with them otherwise he would have resigned last July. All the big free agent players are signing bonus driven contracts like Taveras where they receive large signing bonuses and low base salaries for each year which probably means that the NHL and NHLPA are headed for another shutdown in a couple of years. There is probably 10 big market teams that can hand out these types of contracts to free agents so the other 21 teams will be fighting against these types of deals in the next CBA.
It's going to be interesting, to see when the Islanders and Leafs play how the Islanders fanbase and players react to him. Good for the Leafs to sign him, the Leafs look good on paper but you still have to play the game. They haven't made it out of the first round in 15 years so everyone will see if they can considering if they don't end up in 1st place in their division it will mean a first round matchup against Boston or Tampa Bay (two teams who are just as good if not better than the Leafs).
What does that have to do with the current state of the team? How is anything you say relevant to what just happened?
Toronto looks solid for the balance of the next 7 year contract. Great team, great farm system great everything. I'd say signing Komorov for such a high contract will contribute to a shutdown more than paying great players good money.
NYI doesn't lack a market to be a wealthy team. It lacks fans in the seats.

Toronto
But chasing a cup was not JT's motive for choosing Toronto and that's why Isles fans believe he lied to them. It had nothing to do with the team Isles management put infront of him. He always wanted to play for Toronto, He even said that in his press conference. "It was my child hood dream to play for the Leafs". He just hid behind the "I don't trust this management" excuse. He didn't choose Toronto because they have a better team than the Isles. Toronto is geographically better. If Toronto's team was as bad as the Isles he still would have chose Toronto.

You know it can be both. Or you could be a petty child. Either works.

Looks solid? The Leafs a great team? They have a very good forward core but the defence is suspect, no true number one D like a Karlsson or Doughty! Until they get that they're far from a great team!

- good young core that will be competitive for the entirety of his contract
- team is doing well now
- hometown ties

No other team could give him this. He emphasized how important all of this is especially the first one. Everyother teams core is far too old by the 5,6,7th years of the contract.
THIS IS FAKE NEWS.

How in the world is it Toronto's fault for Tavares signing with them?? Did they take his fiance hostage and force him to sign? Tavares is a big boy and made a big boy decision. Toronto shouldn't be looked at as the bad guy in the situation.

You realize the Leafs finished with 105 points last season without Tavares right? Looks like having a number one D like Karlsson helped Ottawa right? Or were they a lottery team? Teams are built differently. Leafs are a good team and if you say otherwise your full of shit.

You may want to actually look into Torontos defense from last year. You may be shocked where they would actually be ranked (hint: they were 12th, and 2nd in the east. That's a full 18 spots ahead of Karlssons team)

Vegas was running with a top pair of McNabb and Schmidt. There are more ways to play defense than to rely on a stud D-man to play 30 minutes a night. As far as I'm concerned, removing Bozak, JVR, Komarov and Polak, while adding Tavares already makes them a better team defensively. And yet, the offseason isn't finished.

Read what I said they're not a great team, a good team, maybe but they still have holes to fill. And yes the Leafs had 105 points and still couldn't get out of the 1st round, right? And their defence had something to do with that! So you don't think a defenceman like Karlsson could help them get over the hump of getting out of the 1st round?

Let's be honest if Fleury didn't play the way he did Vegas doesn't get out of the 1st round.

And you're a homer! So if you're done with the childish comments, so what if they were 11th in GA, there aren't a lot of strong teams in the Eastern conference. And if Andersen didn't stand on his head most nights the team GA would have been a lot higher. The bottom line they didn't play great team defence, they relied on Andersen to bail them out and if he didn't they were screwed (do you remember the 1st round of the playoffs)!
