Why?

The Leafs #3 goalie before today was probably Keith Petruzzelli or Dennis Hildeby. They are using their financial muscle to land an experienced #3 G that they will be able to put on the Marlies if he clears waivers.

Can think of a few backups / insurance #3s that are worse. And for 875k, this signing is worth the risk in case Woll doesn't light it up.

I won't say he's very good, but if he's good enough in his role, then why not?

Why?

Nothing wrong with competition for the backup spot. Most of our teams have a #3 goalie that we hope doesn't see significant NHL time.

Jones is not #2 Woll is #2

Defaulted to listing by cap hit. I imagine they told Jones he'd have the chance to win the backup gig. If I listed three goalies, that's because it seems like it'll be a spot to be determined in camp.

Everyone loves to shit on Jones but he's not that bad, and I want to see Woll get more starts. I hate to see money wasted on a playoff failure like Samsonov.

Playoffs is all that matters, where the difference between Jones and Samsonov is negligible. Hell Jones has actually taken a team to a SCF.
