You didnt, you said top pairing LD in general, which would include Brodie.
You said the price would be too high, I say otherwise

I'm pretty sure the price would be higher than I'd be willing to pay, despite The Flames trying to move salary. Gallagher and Danault are not available, obviously.

Probably workable. Plenty of worries on both sides, I think.

It's modifiable if Romanov is that big of an objection. We don't have much room for additional LDs in any case.

Would Murray for Suzuki work? Or something around that?

Yeah Romanov is a no-go. What else would interest Columbus?

Or else, what about a Tatar for Murray swap?

Brodie is a left handed D, but he is a RD, isn't he?

If he is a RD, we don't really have a use for him, we already have Weber-Petry and Juulsen will be a very good 3rd pairing. If he struggle on the left side, we don't really have a use either.

I would do Juulsen a 2020 2nd and a 2021 4th (becomes 2nd if Brodie resigns)

He plays both, he struggled on the left when Michael Stone was his linemate

I wouldn't give Juulsen if he is only a rental (Brodie might be worth it, but Habs aren't contending this year, so giving Juulsen for a rental isn't helping us at all). And if he's struggling on the left side (he would obviously play with a better partner than Stone, so it's hard to say), Habs-Calgary are probably bad trading partner. You would want value for what he can do on the right side, but we would only want to pay for what he will bring us on the left side.

He was very good as an LD with Engelland and RD Gio as partner in Hartley's system, acceptable as LD with Stone as a partner/playing in Gulutzan's system, abysmal with Hamonic as a partner/playing in Gulutzan's system as the LD and has been great with Gio as his partner/playing in Peter's system as the RD.

Hamonic has been very good in Peter's system.

Overall, Flames fans still have no damn clue which aspect was the bigger reason for Brodie's drop in play: Brodie (off ice stuff with his fiance finding out she had MS), his partner, playing his off side or the coach. Many of us think it was mainly the coach and partner combined, but honestly, sample size is kinda small. One however, can ascertain that at one point under Hartley, Brodie looked like Gio's heir apparent on the top line long term. Under Gulutzan, he was essentially a bum to be run out of town. Under Peter's everyone thinks it was all Gio that Brodie looked remotely passable, but many of us don't agree it was purely Gio (although we agree Gio was huge for Brodie and vice versa).

Murray for Tatar straight up?

Good winger for a good young d-man with top pairing upside?

Sounds fair..

Problem is he averages 53 games per season. There's more risk attached to Murray than there is to Tatar. Tatar is pretty much a lock to be a top 6 player and score 25 goals if you play him with proper players.

Would Montreal have any interest in Zadorov? And if so, what would they offer in return?

Avs probably wouldn't consider moving him until after Cole comes back from injury in December, and Avs fans don't particularly want to see him go, but he figures to be the odd one out once Byram establishes himself and capspace starts to become important for Colorado in 2 years time.

If Byram takes the step up this season already and Cole returns in reasonable shape (both big if's admittedly) then Zadorov could be expendable already at some point during this season.

Just sign Gardiner. Have to think he is at the point where if a solid deal comes across the table, he's signing.

Think he would look very solid with a guy like Weber. So much so, that id worry about him becoming a leaf killer... (it isn't like we have the team to make him scared to retrieve pucks)

Dont you think if that was something that might happen it would have been done like a month ago? There is also rumours that Gardener has a deal set up already.

After the Alzner signing, don't blame the Habs for being hesistant on another FA like Gardiner who has/had chronic back issues and was a shell of his free-skating self with us last season.

Ghost would be an intriguing pickup if they made a push for him, and with the Braun and Niskanen pickups he might be expendable, but he would cost a lot.

Either way, LHD should be a fairly easy position to fill so it shouldn't be too hard for them to find a guy to play with Weber if Mete isn't quite there yet; Ben Chariot is not that guy.

What do you mean "becoming" a Leaf killer? He's been a Leaf killer for years.

No chance do I want Montreal to sign Jake Gardiner.

firing Hartley was the biggest mistake of the flames

Hmm, yes and no. I think Hartley had to be gone. I would have liked for Hartley to have one more year, but I see why management rushed to do it.

Hartley had just won the Jack Adams the season before. The Flames are no unique in this regard for firing a guy soon after the Jack Adams, in fact, it was sorta seen (on HF at least) as somewhat of a kiss of death for some coaches. Hartley was also rumored to have lost the room and the players were vying for his departure so to a certain extent, management was considering a replacement. Management was supposedly slightly hesitant of his style (and lack of structure) so in the exit interview, they asked Hartley how he was going to change and address those issues. Hartley openly in the media supposedly said something along the lines of, "I don't think there's anything that needs to be changed." Which created an issue where Treliving had to come back from Europe to do an emergency meeting (I think he was GMing some tournament or something where he met Peters) and within a week, he was fired. I think management wanted to keep him one more year (to play out his contract, before replacing him) but his statement in the exit interview forced their hand. It was also rumored that better candidates were available the season after. The Flames needed structure and more development of kids rather than just a motley crew of misfit toys to go balls to the wall every night so wanted a development coach.

To precursor, there has always been rumors that ownership meddles a lot in the actions of the GM which started somewhere along the lines of Sutter and Feaster. Burke was brought in to help right the ship, but he also thought of himself as the insulation between ownership and GM to give the GM the ability to operate freely. Things like improving the farm is generally not the GM's responsibility, but Treliving wanted it done, so it was pushed through. After many years of sinking assets to get rid of bad contracts (which really hurt the team and made the cupboards bare), Treliving finally broke the streak and successfully was allowed to do buyouts. We still have yet to see salary retention. We know that a Ben Bishop trade/contract extension was scuttled at least in 3 ways by ownership. Once due to contract asks by Bishop, (Best guess was it was a 6.75 x 6 which was vetoed), once when King being unavailable to approve moves which meant Bishop was traded to LA for cheap rather than Calgary, once because ownership wasn't happy of the assets involved in the Bishop trade. Supposedly, Calgary offered a competitive deal for Bishop in FA, but Bishop was sick of the trades falling through so many times, so he decided to go to Dallas instead instead of having his chain yanked again. I think this ownership meddling played a heavy hand in restricting the ability for Treliving to hire the guy he wanted. I think that's also why he chose to go all in on Bill Peters afterwards, but also the reason why he ended up with Glen Gulutzan (who IMO will end up with NHL head coach opportunities over the next decade or so and do a decent job. I think Eakins doing well will allow more teams to understand how important fit of a coach is.).

While there were some other high profile coaches that season, it seemed we didn't even approach them with a reasonable offer. Gulutzan was the guy that was ultimately hired, and there's quite a few Flames fans that think it ultimately had a lot to do with ownership not wanting to pay a ton for a coach (nickle and dimes for certain aspects of running the org). Although unknown, it is believed Gulutzan was paid approximately $700-900K for his time in Calgary as HC. I believe Peters only makes around 1.6MM. I can see why Treliving went all in on a guy like Peters. He is in a small restricted pool of possible candidates that ownership will approve based on salary and he is by far the closest in what Treliving desires in terms of style, in game management and new age vs old age coaching.

I like Peters. I think he's hilariously a blend of the best aspects of Gulutzan and Hartley. He lacks the experience that Hartley has though. IMO, Hartley will return to the NHL one day. Someone is going to pay him a pretty penny to do so though. I felt like he would have been a good fit in Montreal prior to Julien taking that role. I wondered about Ottawa at times as well, but I doubt Melnyk would pay what is required to pry him out of his fun and comfortable gigs in Europe. I miss Hartleyisms.
